Unbridled tenacity pours out of her, through her songs, through conversation — she evokes a passion for music and life on the road. This year Mare will have spent hours driving throughout the U.S. and Canada, far from the familiar family and friends, as she visits every nook and cranny willing to share a couple of microphones and a stage. Her live shows have become many towns’ worst-kept secret as repeat audience members thrive on Mare’s clever humor and her songs that have the familiarity of an old friend. Touring in support of “Take Me Home,” a 12-song collection that is all things personal, introspective and intelligent, Mare (pronounced Mary) enlisted the tight-knit community behind Nashville’s Station Inn as her backing band for the new disc. JEFFERSON CLASSICAL GUITAR to hold benefit for season On Sunday at 3 p.m., the Jefferson Classical Guitar Society will present the second annual JCGS Benefit Concert to help raise funds for the 2005-2006 JCGS Concert Series. The concert will take place at the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St. in Ashland. Tickets are $15 general admission, $5 for students, children under 12 get in free. They can be purchased in advance at CD Or Not CD, 343 E. Main St. in Ashland or at Central Art Supply, 101 N. Central Ave. in Medford. Tickets will also be available at the door. The JCGS Benefit Concert will present an exciting program of guitar music performed by the professional members and friends of the Jefferson Classical Guitar Society. Included on the program will be 17-year-old Ashland High student Jaxon Williams, who recently won first place in the classical guitar category of the state solo competition sponsored by the Oregon Music Educators Association, and flamenco guitarist Grant Ruiz, who recently returned from six months of guitar studies with flamenco masters in Seville, Spain. Special guest artists Donna Stewart and Ron Andrico will perform lute and vocal duets from the Renaissance. Also on the program will be the finger-style seven-string jazz guitarist extraordinaire Bil Leonhart, classical guitarists Steve Berman and Joseph Thompson, an appearance by the SOU Guitar Quartet and the long anticipated reunion of the Dark Rose Trio. Money raised through this concert will help fund the 2005-2006 JCGS Concert Series, which will feature three world-class concert guitarists in concerts and master classes. First in the series is James Edwards on Nov. 18. Second is Philip Hii on Feb. 3, 2006. The final artist in the series is Ana Vidovic on March 24, 2006. Each performer will present a master class on the Saturday following the concert. ‘ THE 1940s RADIO HOUR’ Camelot Theatre opens swing era musical Camelot Theatre Company presents “The 1940’s Radio Hour,” written by Walton Jones. The musical previews Thursday at 8 p.m., opening on Friday and running through Nov. 13. All Friday, Saturday and Monday performances are at 8 p.m. and all Sundays at 2 p.m., with a special pay-what-you-can performance on Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. Camelot veteran John Litton directs “The 1940’s Radio Hour.” Starring in the role of Anne Collier is Equity actress Priscilla Quinby. Valley musician Paul Jenny stars as lead singer Johnny Cantone. Joseph Charter plays stage manager, choreographer and sound effects man Lou Cohn. Heiland Hoff plays Neal Tilden. Other cast members include Camelot veterans Tanya Lunt, Jack Seybold, Jerry McDougall, Mandy Andersen, Karl Iverson, Daniel Stephens, Artattack company member Kirah Solomon and Heather Lane. Musical direction is by Bay Area musical director Lou Franks. Reservations are recommended. Tickets are $12 for previews. All other regular performances are $16 for students and seniors and $18 for adults. Tickets are available through the Camelot box office only (located at the corner of Talent Avenue and Main Street in Talent). Reserved seats are available for an additional $2 per ticket. Camelot Theatre will no longer be using Grocery Outlet in Medford as a ticket outlet as most Camelot patrons are purchasing tickets through the theater box office. VIVA VOCE show to benefit the Barn The Siskiyou Institute presents Viva Voce in a benefit fundraising concert for the Siskiyou Institute. This event will help to raise funds for the Siskiyou Institute’s music education and workshop series. All donations are tax deductible. Let your hair down, dust off your memories and sing along with Viva Voce song leaders Rick Soued and Tish McFadden, joined by singer/guitarist Mike Vediner, singer/guitarist, banjo and mandolin player Brian Freeman, pianist Don Harriss, bassist Steve Fain, and vocalists Lynn Fain and Joanne Soued. Choose your favorites from a song list of over 100 folk and rock titles from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Don't miss out on the fun and your chance to sing out loud at the Old Siskiyou Barn. Viva Voce, the hootenanny folk band that has performed for the past eight years at the Old Siskiyou Barn, is playing a benefit concert for the Siskiyou Institute consisting of a family-oriented, multi-generational concert of sing-along favorites, bringing community singing back to the concert hall. Past audiences remark they leave their shows filled with the spirit of community and music. People who would never sing in public find themselves singing out the lyrics of songs they haven’t sung in decades — and enjoy the connection with others from a shared cultural and musical past. Viva Voce plays many of the most memorable folk songs of the era with original arrangements of well-loved tunes, made familiar by groups including Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Kingston Trio, James Taylor, Joe & Eddie and many more. For the band, the music has great power. Bring your voice to this show; the music will be familiar and the fun is contagious. The show is at the Old Siskiyo Barn Saturday at 8 p.m.. PIANIST JON GALFANO will perform from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the grand opening of the Best of Oregon store, 383 East Main St. The store will offer wine tasting Saturday and Sunday, featuring samplings from Troon, Valley View, Eden Vale and Weisinger’s wineries. The store will also have gourmet food samples availble. OTIS MURPHY on sax at SOU The SOU Department of Music and the Music Matters Student Concert Board will present Otis Murphy, saxophone and Haruko Murphy, piano in concert. The recital will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the SOU Music Recital Hall. Tickets are free to students with identification, $12 for general admission and $9 for seniors. Professor Murphy will be presenting a free master class at 1 p.m., also in the SOU Music Recital Hall. Born in 1972, Otis Murphy joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Music in 2001 at the age of 28, becoming one of the youngest faculty members in the history of the IU School of Music. Otis Murphy’s primary teachers include Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Eugene Rousseau and Kenneth Fischer. He holds the Prix de Perfectionnement from the Conservatoire National Régional de Musique, Cergy-Pontoise, France; the Master of Music degree from Indiana University, graduating with the Performer’s Certificate, the highest honor given to a performer at this institution; and the Bachelor of Music Education degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Georgia. He has won numerous awards and prizes that include second prize in the Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition (1998) in Belgium, third in the Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone Competition (1996) in France, first in the Heida Hermanns Young Artist Competition, second in the Saint Louis Symphony Young Artist Competition, and the J. William Fulbright Grant that allowed saxophone study in France. In addition to his frequent solo appearances throughout the United States, he has also performed and given saxophone classes in France, Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Belgium and Italy. He has appeared at some of the most prestigious saxophone events in the world, performing as a concerto soloist at he Ravenna Music Festival in Italy, the 12th and 13th World Saxophone Congresses in Montreal, Quebec, and Minneapolis; a guest soloist with the U.S. Navy Band at the 26th Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium in Washington, D.C.; an invited soloist at the 7th British Saxophone Congress in Wales and at the 2003 New England Saxophone Symposium; and as a professor at the 2003 Faenza International Saxophone Festival of Italy. Joining Otis in performance is his wife, Haruko. Born in 1973 in Japan, Haruko Murphy moved to San Jose, California with her family in 1988. She received the Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in piano performance, both with highest distinction, from the Indiana University School of Music, studying with distinguished professor Menahem Pressler throughout her tenure at this institution. In addition, she studied at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, Netherlands, as a pupil of Jan Huizing.
