--> --> Nov. 13: Six Grizzlies named net all-stars By Bobby Heiken Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High volleyball team's third-place finish in Southern Oregon Conference action didn't hurt the team when it came time for voting for conference all-stars. Ashland seniors Molly Grossmann and Kacey Zundel and juniors Marla Morin and Megan Beugli were all first-team All-SOC picks, while seniors Tiffany Talbott and Ashley Fence were each honorable mention selections. Grossmann and Beugli are both two-time first-teamers. The awards were announced today. Grossmann, a first-team setter, led the team with 10.1 assists and had a serving percentage of 98 percent with 14 aces and only two errors. "Molly got a lot of respect from coaches not only in our conference but in the state," Grizz head coach Josh Rohlfing said. "She worked so hard to get where she is and everyone else raised their level of play. She set a great example for everyone." Beugli burst on the scene last year and was named as the SOC's top defensive specialist and followed that up again in 2001. Beugli averaged 2.3 digs a game and missed only eight of 154 serves. "Megan was consistent for the whole season," Rohlfing said. "To get over two digs a game and not play all the way around is impressive. For two years she's been doing the same thing and other coaches recognize it. She's the one player other team's aren't going to attack." Morin battled back from a slow start to make a name for herself by the end of the year. The middle blocker led the team in blocks (1.5) and kills (3.6) and had a .412 hitting percentage. "The first half of the season everyone knew she was good," Rohlfing said. "The second half of the year everyone knew she was great. The exciting thing is she's only going to get better. She's going to become more dominate and get better mentally." Zundel was the heart-and-soul of the Grizzlies and a member of four playoff teams. The outside hitter led Ashland in digs with 4.7 a game and also added 108 kills on the year. "Those digs are extremely good for high school," Rohlfing said. "She came through in every big match that we had. She was also a leader for us. She had seen it before her in Loriana (Berman) and Chelsea (Morgan) and knew what to do. She has seen so much volleyball that it slowed the game down for her." Talbott finished second on the team with 3.6 digs a game. "Like Megan that number is impressive if you consider she only played half of the time," Rohlfing said. "She's the type of player that can come in and pick up a team and she did that for us." Fence finished the season with 69 kills and a .358 hitting percentage and came on strong in the last few weeks. The first half of the season, Fence recorded 17 kills, compared to the second half where she came through with 52 for the Grizzlies. "Her play won a couple matches for us at the end of the year," Rohlfing said. "She's been the most fun to watch improve throughout the year. She's got an incredible swing from the right side." Roseburg's Shannon Burmeister was named the SOC's MVP, while Crater's Leaf Jensen and Roseburg's Bruce Meyers shared coaching honors. The Grizzlies finished the year with a 21-9 record and won the consolation championship at last weekend's Class 4A state tournament. Email your...
