He passed away peacefully doing what he loved. Born on the south side of Chicago, Richard was raised with much love by his hard-working single mother Hannah. He forsook his high school classes for the sunny afternoons and day baseball at Wrigley Field and the Chicagoland Racetracks. Following his service in the U.S. Army he launched his career in Social Work as a caseworker with the Jewish Children's Bureau, Catholic Charities, Hull House, and Juvenile Protective Association. After achieving his MSW at Loyola University of Chicago he moved to Oregon where he became the Executive Director of Wednesday's Child, an innovative child sexual abuse treatment and prevention agency in Klamath Falls. Richard was a dedicated social worker in private practice for over 32 years in Medford and Portland. His co-therapists included Collies, Ramsey and Shoeless and most recently, his beloved Greyhounds, Whistle and Stretch. A plethora of cats were often found on his lap at home. He took much pride in his volunteer work including, Friends of the Animal Shelter, Spay Neuter Your Pet, Meals on Wheels, Greyhound Pet Adoption NW, Returning Veterans Project, and most recently the development of the Portland Food Project. As an amateur chocolatier, he founded How Sweet It Is in Ashland. Richard's chocolate-dipped raspberries and mini cheesecakes were infused with his warmth, generosity, humor, and whimsical nature. He was a loving son, dad, brother, and friend, we will miss this generous and complex soul. Preceded in death by his mother, Hannah and sister, Lynne he is missed daily and dearly by his daughter, Lorien and son-in-law DJ, his brother Bob as well as his many friends, colleagues, clients, and fellow volunteers. Donations may be made in Richard's honor to SNYP (Medford), Greyhound Pet Adoptions NW, Gastrointestinal Research Foundation (Chicago) and the Portland Food Project. A celebration of life will be held for Richard from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on his 71st birthday, Sunday, June 7, 2015.
