Cook Ashland The crazies are in full charge. America (and the rest of the world) might as well wake up to reality. Republicans have allowed an extreme right wing of religious fanatics, big business interests and utopian ideologues to hijack their party, and they have won big. The extreme right now controls the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The religious right (evangelicals and fundamentalists) supplies the party with religious fervor, the laissez faire corporate sector supplies it with money and institutional support and the neocons supply the foreign policy. Principle is left far behind. The religious right would make America in effect a theocracy, because it puts the Bible and priestly interpretation ahead of the Constitution. They believe that the Bible is God’s word — inerrant, unambiguous and absolute — thereby superseding the Constitution, science and reason, which are only the work of man. “Laissez faire” is a pretender for an economic theory of capitalism. It is supposed to provide validity for the idea that says that capitalism works best for society without government regulation or interference. Economic theory, experience and common sense show that laissez faire is only good for the giant corporations and financial institutions that dominate the economy. It is guaranteed to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Big companies will become freer and freer to destroy their smaller competitors, mislead consumers and pollute and savage the land. The neocons are a handful of intellectuals running the Defense Department who see the world strictly in military terms. Their thinking is fully spelled out in a document entitled “Rebuilding America’s Defenses” available via Google. A few quotes define their position: “At present the United States faces no global rival.” “America’s grand strategy should be to preserve and extend this advantageous position as far into the future as possible.” Bush has already begun to act on their plan, which is to democratize the Middle East, starting with Iraq (which they thought would be quick and easy) and then move on to the rest of the world. In this new world, religion and intolerance reign supreme, science and reason are dead or seriously crippled, the federal government is a junior partner to big business and war will be with us until America rules the world, which may take some time. Pax Americana is the battle cry.
