This time, the Grizzlies hit 12 of 19 free throws in the second half Tuesday night to survive a scare from the pesky Grants Pass Cavers. Ashland won the Southern Oregon Conference contest, 49-42, at Mountain Avenue Gym. "We just kind of played ho-hum," Ashland coach Ken Lathen said. "In the course of a season - it's a long season - people do that. We survived it and that's what good teams do. To our girls' credit, we seem to do what we have to do to win the games." Ashland's seventh straight win to open SOC play allowed the Grizzlies (9-7) to stay one game ahead of North Medford (15-2 overall, 6-1 SOC) in the league standings. The second half of the SOC season kicks off Friday with the biggest game of the season: Ashland's rematch with the Black Tornado. The Grizzlies won the first meeting, 47-44, in Ashland on Jan. 4, but Friday's game will be played at North. "Well, I would hope that it's the same close game and that we come out on top," Lathen said. "We're going to have to go out and play well, shoot well and do our best. If we win it, we're obviously in the driver's seat to win the conference." Ashland was in the driver's seat to win big Tuesday before Grants Pass (8-6, 2-5 SOC) turned the game around and nearly pulled off the shocker. The Cavers pulled within one in the fourth quarter before the Grizzlies, led by junior guard Jamie Roupp, regained control. Roupp hit 9 of 12 free throws and led the Grizzlies with 25 points and five rebounds. Her long jumper early in the fourth quarter sparked Ashland's clutch finish. The Grizzlies blew a chance to finish the Cavers off in the first half by hitting just 7 of 18 free throws. They finished 20 of 37 for the game. Ashland's field goal percentage was far better. The Grizzlies drilled 14 of 31 shots against a defense designed to stop Ashland's most lethal weapon. "Their game plan was to try and stop Alysse [Carlson]," Lathen said. "She only got four shots off in the whole game. However, that wasn't a problem because the other girls were scoring. We had just really good team balance." Four other Grizzlies scored at least five points, including Carlson, who finished with five points, five assists and three rebounds. Abeni Hill and Tess Golling scored six apiece.
