Mexican food leads to April Fool's Day burglary By Myles Murphy Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland's most recent dastardly crime has turned out to be less a transgression of the rule of law than a violation of common sense. The Tuesday burglary of all sorts of cool stuff valued at $13,000 from a Susan Lane residence was just an April Fools Day prank. "I wasn't exactly pissed (when informed of the prank)," joke victim Liam Gillies said this morning. "I was a mixture of pissed at them and happy to get my stuff back." Housemate Erik Able was one of the masterminds of the joke, which was cooked up Monday at an all-night restaurant in Medford. "There's nothing like 24-hour Mexican food for some late-night brainstorming," Able said. Able is one of the operators of Ashland business 3AM Enterprises, which has promoted recent ski and snowboard events at Mount Ashland. The promoting experience paid off, with Able and his cohorts pulling off a rather convincing burglary. "We took all the expensive equipment, all the computers, the bikes, snowboards, the camera," Able said. "I sacrificed some pottery too. We have it all on video tape. We have us just trashing the place, tipping over the pool table, tearing down posters." Gillies was so convinced he reported the event to the police. "I was shocked (when he found the mess)," Gillies said. "I just couldn't even think. Whether it was funny or not, I'm not sure." Able was contrite this morning, especially after the police came into the picture. "I apologize to the APD for getting them involved and I'm sorry for wasting their time," Able said. "Even though it did make it more realistic." The prank was actually performed on April 2, disqualifying it as an official April Fools Day joke. "We thought they'd be less suspicious on April 2," Able said. Now Able is preparing for prankish retribution from Gillies, who has said he has nothing planned. "Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could top that," Gillies said.
