Bringhurst Posted Jun. 3, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Editor's note: This marks the initial weekly installment of excerpts from the archives of "As It Was: Tales from the State of Jefferson," a co-production of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jefferson Public Radio. The Tidings is pleased to collaborate with SOHS and JPR in sharing these insights into local history. This installment was written in 2007. By 1892, pioneer ranchers had carved a growing neighborhood out of the manzanita brush south of Ashland. In 1893, they created the Bellview School District, opened a single one-room school house and enrolled 22 boys and 17 girls. A stove in the middle of the room provided heat. Neighbors used the school on Sundays for church services. In 1928, as enrollment increased, the people of Bellview considered sending their children to school in Ashland, but decided it was more cost effective to build a larger school. They tore down the original structure and built a new school in 1929 with three classrooms, a cafeteria, and a furnace room. In 1940, the district began sending seventh and eighth graders to Ashland Junior High at the cost of $6.60 a student per month. Additions and changes have accommodated the growing Bellville population since 1929. Today, with money from a recently approved school bond, the Ashland School Board, with support from the Historic Commission, has chosen to save the 78-year-old, 8000-square-foot-historical structure. It will be incorporated within a new 54,000-square-foot Bellview Elementary School, serving students from the California border to the Greensprings area, and up Dead Indian Memorial Highway.
