Fifteen million dollars is real money. Twenty-seven million dollars to pay off existing debt is real money. I agree with those in the community who consider AFN an asset. My concern, which I have commented on during the budget season for several years is: How do we pay for it and run the network as a business in a competitive environment? The proposal from Jefferson Public Radio to operate AFN and assume a portion of existing debt is interesting, even intriguing. JPR has a long record of community service and expanding market area, which I think could serve AFN and the Ashland community quite well. I encourage the Ashland City Council and the JPR Board of Directors to direct their staffs to continue current conversations on this proposal. Perhaps a joint public meeting of the Ashland City Council and JPR Board would be in order. Time is of the essence. If this process could be completed before June 30, the end of the current fiscal year, it would be very beneficial to AFN and the Ashland community. Ron Roth Ashland Bigger taste coming in April How refreshing it is to read an editorial (“Just another day in paradise,” Feb. 25) celebrating the vibrancy of Ashland and the return of “the season.” Spring does bring some wonderful events as you mentioned but, at risk of sounding too picky, I must make a small correction. A Taste of Ashland, produced by the hardworking volunteers of the Ashland Gallery Association, takes place in late April rather than late March as you noted. The dates for this year are April 29 and 30 with a free Gala Preview the evening of the 28th. You did mention the pairing of restaurants with galleries but did not mention the wineries that join with them in each space. This year, 20 AGA galleries will be taking part with nearly 50 restaurants and wineries from around our region. It is the largest “Taste” yet and, like the film festival, has become a signature event that draws patrons from around the West specifically for the weekend. I think Spring went to my head, especially now as I shiver in the recent storm. Thank you for correcting it for our readers. No beef with editorial policy A recent letter from Mr. Forsyth includes my name among those who have chided the editor for instituting a "new editorial policy." So far as I can recall, I have never so chided the editor, believing that such policy is indeed an editor’s prerogative in the first place. So long as the policy is rational, flexible and not unfairly administered, readers and letter writers should live with it, cavil though they may. Also, I recall H. L. Mencken's sage advice, “Never get in a fight in print with a guy who buys ink by the barrel.” Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Brown should do his research Aaron Brown told us last week (March 1) that TV network ownership is now just a few big corporations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re dictating the news. When someone in the audience stood up to disagree, Aaron firmly told him his world-view about corporate media was incorrect. TV news, he said, is just a business giving us whatever we watch the most of. Aaron lost his job last fall to someone new. That’s OK, he says, noting the passing of Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw (voluntarily retired) and Dan Rather (we all know what happened to him, likely canned for exposing Bush for being AWOL often). Asked how the media can think itself credible, yet expect us to accept that a Boeing 757 commercial airplane could penetrate the well-defended airspace of the Pentagon and crash into it, he replied “there is no evidence to disprove that’s what happened.” If Brown is curious for evidence as surely all newsmen are, he should read the scholarly work of Professor David Ray Griffin, “The New Pearl Harbor.” G.
