- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us June 13, 2006 LETTER: at length The flag has got to go The mission statement of PremierWest Bank (PWB) begins by stating, “We are committed to being the best community bank throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California . . ..” Yet, this self-proclaimed community-minded bank has come into our community, and the first thing it does is introduce an intrusive eyesore in the form of a ridiculously huge, disproportionate-to-the-surroundings flag which obstructs a once-uninterrupted, beautiful view of the surrounding hillsides as one crested the Highway 66 railroad overpass, heading east. Is this the way a business regards a community it has been welcomed to? This absurdly large flag is a blot on the glorious landscape of our area. It is a display not of patriotism but of excessiveness and of disrespect to the community into which the bank has come. The beautiful greens and purples of the valley head, and the wonderful rainbows often glowing over the eastern hills are now disrupted from view by this monstrosity that blankets the vista. When my wife and I, and some friends, learnt that PWB was opening a branch here, we looked into possibly doing business with them; however, with the arrogant disregard evident in the raising of this intrusive eyesore, we have all decided to boycott the establishment unless it takes some action to eliminate this eyesore by flying a more conservative, less vulgar flag. Even the previous tenant, McDonald’s (despite that business’ proclivity for “super-sizing”) had enough sense of decorum to fly a modest flag, which complemented the surroundings instead of obliterating them. In the interest of maintaining the aesthetic splendor of Ashland, I urge all fellow Ashland residents to boycott this branch (and to notify them why) until PWB removes this obtrusiveness, and fly’s a proper, discreet and respectful flag. With all the recent talk about beautification programs in the works for Ashland, allowing this arguably jingoistic blot to dominate the natural glory of our panorama is unacceptable and incongruous with Ashland’s ambience and demeanor.
