LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, July 25 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jul. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 25, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Pit bull attacked us How very ironic we opened our Tidings on July 20 and saw your front-page article, as the day before at the same time my husband was leash walking our little Sheltie. Both were jumped and repeatedly bitten by a loose pit bull on Manzanita Street. The owner was not present until she "got out of the shower" and was then no help in subduing the dog. We spent four hours at the Animal Emergency Clinic, and then spent another two hours at Ashland Hospital's emergency room to have my husband's wound taken care of. You can see by the order of our hospital visits that we indeed love our animals, and their care is first, ours second. We are certainly not antagonistic about "saving" good dogs. However, we find that although this neighborhood dog was adopted from the Jackson County facility that you speak of in your article, he was apparently  not  socialized and rehabilitated, the new owner was  not  educated about leash and verbal control of family dogs, and that good dog owners are to be at the mercy of a system that doesn't seem to be working as you portrayed it in your article. I think you owe us an article that speaks to this side of the issue. What do you think? Joanie Kintscher Ashland Syn-turf gets hot Regarding the use of synthetic turf on median strips: City officials need to consider that this turf gets hot; much hotter than normal grass. This has always been the case. Even in the 60s when the first Astro Turf was introduced, the players were complaining about much hotter it is. You can check this by comparing how the sample at North Mountain Park feels compared to the regular grass right next to it. I checked it today and was noticeable. On a really hot day, there would be a big difference. On a cumulative basis, I hope they are considering how much more of a 'heat island' areas of this town could become unless the synthetic turf is restricted to very shady areas. It might be a better idea overall to go with the drought tolerant lawns except for areas where you're certain things will stay shady and cool most of the time. (I don't know who thought up the synthetic turf idea in the first place, but it doesn't sound like someone who's from around here.) Andrew Kubik Ashland Poor judgment Obama used very poor judgment in making an agreement with Iran. As a result, Iran will have many billions of dollars to continue its role as the world's biggest supporter of terrorism. Saudi Arabia, Egypt and perhaps other nations will be forced to develop atomic weapons in order to defend themselves. Obama has put Israel at risk of annihilation because the agreement will allow Iran to have unfettered access to atomic weapons. There is a clause in the agreement with the caption, "Nuclear Safety, Safeguards and Security", which obliges America and other countries to defend Iran in the event it is attacked and to train Iran to protect itself against sabotage. It makes absolute sense that Iran would never sign this agreement without that guaranty. That means that if Israel defends itself against Iran, America, under Obama, may be obliged to go to war against Israel. Obama, in my opinion, won't hesitate to punish Israel, but he's unwilling to do anything about ISIS. Obama doesn't want the American people to have a say about this agreement. He has bypassed Congress and gone directly to the United Nations. Obama's preference would be a world government through the U.N. Obama has created the danger that Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Israel will be forced to go to war against Iran before it's too late. He claims that if Iran cheats, we'll know it and can reinstate the sanctions. If they cheat, we're not going to know it and reinsatement of sanctions ain't gonna happen. It's one stupid and irrational thing after another that Obama has done during his six years as president. I hope America can survive the remainder of his term.
