From the creators of “Wicked,” “Godspell,” “Pippin,” “Miss Saigon” and “Les Miserables” comes a playful and moving story about parents, children and children who inevitably become parents. Following in the footsteps of biblically based musicals such as “Godspell,” “Two by Two” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Children of Eden,” by Stephen Schwartz and John Caird, is loosely based on the first nine books of Genesis. Directed by artistic director Livia Genise, with musical direction by Jennifer Schloming and choreography by Rebecca Campbell, “Children of Eden” is a funny, loving and compassionate musical that looks at how children and their parents are changed by love, loss and the lessons in life. Says director Genise: “While Stephen Schwartz has based his story on the Old Testament, his characters are as human as we are. The father in ‘Children of Eden’ is, like all parents, just trying to do the right thing while still being loving and supportive. And as most parents do, he learns from his children, and the children of Eden learn from him.” The musical begins with the creation and, through the prism of a parent and his curious and sometimes rebellious teenagers, takes us on a journey from Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden to the conflict between Adam and his son Cain to the death of Abel in Act 1. A reggae number at the start of Act 2 moves us from Adam through the “Generations” to Noah and his three sons (all teenagers) and on to the flood. With lyrics like “The hardest part of love is the letting go” and “Our hands can choose to drop the knife; our hearts can choose to stop the hating,” “Children of Eden” is a show you will never forget!” Get Out Where : Camelot Theatre, 101 Talent Ave at Main St., Talent What : “Children of Eden,” a musical for the entire family. Regular performance schedule is Monday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday performances are at 2 p.m. There is a special pay-what-you-can performance on July 21 at 8 p.m. Cost : $16 (students and seniors), $18 (adults); reserved seats $2 additional per ticket. Preview tickets are $12. Outlets : Theatre Box Office (535-5250) or Grocery Outlet (35 Stewart Ave., Medford) Special Performances : Pay-what-you-can on Thursday, July 21 at 8 p.m. and Summer Camp Matinee on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. “Children of Eden” stars Don Mathews and Gary Nelson (alternating in the role of Father), Laura Derocher as Eve and Mama Noah and David Gabriel as Adam and Noah. Its cast of 26 includes 18 students ranging from 7 to 17 years old. Costumes are by Emily Ehrlet Inget, set design is by Susan Russell, lighting design by Bart Grady and props are by Marilyn Simmonds-Cole. Currently a voice teacher and member of the music faculty at SOU, Mathews has appeared in numerous Rogue Valley productions, including “South Pacific,” “The Fantasticks” and “Our Town.” Nelson is a veteran singer with the Rogue Valley Chorale. Derocher has starred as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Eliza in “My Fair Lady” and Marian in “The Music Man.” Gabriel has played the title role in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Che in “Evita” with the Rogue Music Theater. Other credits include Frederick in “Pirates of Penzance” and Freddie in “My Fair Lady.” Derocher and Gabriel appeared together last season in “The Sisters Rosensweig” and in Camelot’s musical review: “It Takes Two…Songs and Stories of Broadway Composer Teams.” The pivotal roles of Cain and Japheth are played by Galen Schloming. Schloming is a sophomore at Northwestern University majoring in theatre. A graduate of Ashland High School, Schloming starred in “Anything Goes” and was last seen at Camelot as Young Woody Guthrie in “Woody Guthrie’s American Song.” Erin Terrell, an Ashland High School junior, plays the roles of Abel and Shem. Terrell recently appeared in AHS’s productions of “Mame,” “Rashomon” and “You Can’t Take It With You.” Mandy Andersen, also an AHS junior, appeared as Mrs. Upson in “Mame,” and her Camelot credits include Carrot Top in “Carnival,” Bet in “Oliver” and Maja in the acclaimed “The Music Lesson.” North Medford sophomore Hillary Burrelle plays Aphra. Burrelle, whose other credits include “Godspell” and “The Music Man,” appeared as an Orphan in Camelot’s production of “Annie.” Cailey McCandless will play Aysha. A junior at St. Mary’s, McCandless has performed the title role in “Annie” and choreographed St. Mary’s production of “Guys and Dolls.” Other cast members include Mikala, Katie and Katira Anderson, Tina and Shay Astor, Caitlin Campbell, Bart Grady, Coca Herried, Renee Hewit, Brianna and Riley Houck, Miko Hughes, Allessandra Jenkins, Tony Laughlin, Elissa Olinger, Andrew Rogers, Sarina Scoggins, Alexandra Schireman, John Simutis, and Jeffrey Starr. “Children of Eden” previews July 13 and 14 at 8 p.m., opens July 15 and runs through Aug. 14. All Friday, Saturday and Monday performances are at 8 p.m. and all Sundays at 2 p.m., with a special pay-what-you-can performance on Thursday, July 21, at 8 p.m. In addition, there will be a special matinee performance of “Children of Eden” on Saturday, August 13 at 2 p.m., with the Camelot Summer Camp students taking on all of the roles. Tickets for the Summer Camp performance are $5 for children 17 and under and $10 for adults. Reservations are recommended. Tickets are $12 for previews. All other regular performances are $16 for students and seniors and $18 for adults. Tickets are available through the Camelot box office (located at the corner of Talent Ave and Main St in Talent) and at Grocery Outlet in Medford.
