Ashland Sanitary will limit its garbage collection to no more than 40 yards from publicly maintained roads because of increased fuel prices. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings The company, which serves customers in and around Ashland and Talent, sent notices out in early September to inform the 300 rural customers of the change. Some of those customers have their trash picked up a mile to 1 1/2 miles from a public road. “The bottom line is ... if we’re going to travel this extra distance, we’ve got to have something,” Ashland Sanitary co-owner Russ Chapman said. “At some point, you got to do it.” Ashland Sanitary already charges a $4.40 monthly fee on top of the trash collection rate for picking up garbage more than 10 yards from the public road. Collecting trash at sites located more than 40 yards from the road is beyond the purview of the company’s franchise through the Jackson County Board of Commissioners, although Ashland Sanitary has provided that service. “We’ve been far too generous,” said Chapman, who said he did not know how much the company spends on fuel. Ashland Sanitary runs a fleet of almost 30 vehicles. All but two run on diesel and, while gas prices have begun to fall, diesel remains expensive. The potential danger the private driveways pose to trash collectors during winter months, the poor state of some driveways and a desire to avoid damage to Ashland Sanitary vehicles also influenced the company’s decision to end service to its most rural customers, according to the Sept. 6 letter customers received from the company. “Most people — the majority — bring it out, and since we sent out that letter, we got probably 20 calls from people who want us to look at adding service beyond those yards,” Chapman said, adding several others have told him they’ll go back to hauling their own trash to the transfer station on Valley View Road. Ashland Sanitary has asked the Jackson County commissioners to consider a proposal that would allow company trucks to continue service to the most rural customers. The commission may consider the increase to service, but a timeline for establishing a new rate for the program and implementing it has not been defined. In Phoenix Sanitary service customers in Phoenix will also see changes in the coming months. The Phoenix City Council approved a hike in the fee Rogue Disposal and Recycling, Inc., charges customers in the city. The 3.6 percent increase goes into effect in January, according to Phoenix city recorder and secretary Betty Smith. The company is not required to explain the increase and did not give the council a rationale, although the rate change is connected to the All Urban Consumers Consumer Price Index and can be revisited annually.
