He was born March 3, 1929 in Arkinda, Ark. to Perry and Cordelia Barger. When he was two weeks old, Ken's family left Arkansas and started the long trip to Oregon, working along the way and settling first in Keno, Ore. In 1938 the family moved to Ashland to make it their permanent home. Ken attended the Ashland school system and graduated from Ashland High School in 1947. Upon graduation, Ken began a short career in the logging industry, working in some of the small logging camps in the Howard Prairie area. In 1949 Uncle Sam sent Ken his draft notice to serve in the Korean conflict. He served with the 45th Military Police. Upon discharge he returned home to find his logging job had been filled and there were no openings. But luck was with him and he was offered a temporary job with the Ashland Police Department. He did not realize at the time that his temporary job would turn into a career of 27 years, retiring as a captain. In 1952 Ken met Betty Mowbray and would marry in 1953. Ken and Betty had three children: A daughter, Joanne and two sons, Kenneth Jr. and Kevin. In 1979 Ken retired and began his new career of fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with his grandson, Karl. Ken and Betty took many trips with Rain Dance tours to many places in the U.S. and Canada. Ken is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Joanne Johnson (Scott); son, Kevin; grandson, Karl Johnson (Samantha); sister, Gladys Bass, of Rogue River, Ore.; brothers, Marvin Barger, of Richland, Wash. and Bill Barger, of Medford, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, three brothers, and one son. Services will be held at Thursday April 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland. Private interment will be at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you donate to hospice, a charity of your choice, or help a family member or friend.
