Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings One bad throw here. A fielding miscue there. And, of course, an offensive explosion by the opponent. The mystery of the Ashland High baseball team grew as deep as its deficit in the league standings Tuesday, when the Grizzlies watched a 3-1 lead disintegrate in a cloud of Crater dust at North Mountain Park. The Comets scored four runs in the fifth inning to hand the Grizzlies their fifth straight Southern Oregon Conference loss, 6-4. Crater improved to 6-7 in league play (9-9 overall) and is battling Grants Pass (8-5 SOC) for the fourth and final state playoff berth, while Ashland is 2-11 in the SOC (4-14 overall) and is running out of feet to shoot. “I’m really disappointed,” Ashland coach Don Senestraro said. “It’s a game we should have won. Again, played good for four innings and then just gave it away. I just don’t know what’s going on.” Senestraro Ashland’s struggling defense was only partly to blame this time. The Grizzlies did commit four errors — about their average — but all of those occurred in the last two innings, when Crater scored just one insurance run. The Comets did most of their damage at the plate, where five big hits, including two doubles, turned the game around in the fifth. Tyler Schmidt, batting in the No. 6 spot, started it off with a leadoff double, and two batters later Shane Ogle added another to pick up an RBI. Tyler Davis then drove in the tying run with a single and two more run-scoring one-baggers by Jeff Weiss and Chuck Grabowski followed. “Momentum got moved and they took hold of it and they lit up the bats and we didn’t,” said Ashland senior catcher Robby Bruce, who threw out three Crater base runners to help keep the Grizzlies close. The Grizzlies closed the gap to one run, 5-4, when Wes Dodds scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the inning, but that was as close as Ashland would get. Weiss, a curveball pitcher, held the Grizzlies to five hits in the complete-game victory, improving to 1-1 on the year. He struck out seven and walked two. Ashland sophomore Gus Gaviglio also went the distance and fell to 2-6 after surrendering nine hits. Ashland scored a run in each of the first three innings, including a home run to center by Aaron San Nicholas in the second. Grizzly leadoff batter Sam Littleton, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, kicked off Ashland’s offensive attack with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to tie the score 1-1. Littleton singled to left on his next at bat in the third and later scored on Steve Jorgensen’s single to right. Jorgensen was stranded at third when Andrew Del Carlo flied out to center. Ashland stranded just two runners on base, as Weiss retired 12 of the last 14 batters, the last eight in order. “It looked high at first, then it would just drop down at the very end,” Ashland third baseman Justin Meza said of Weiss’ curve. Ashland has just eight league games left. Senestraro said the Grizzlies will play to win and that giving playing time to younger players for experience will take a back seat to that cause. “Every game I play I’ll try to win,” Senestraro said. “I’m not to the point where I’m giving up and I’m going to start playing younger kids and I don’t think I’ll ever get there.” Crater 100 041 0 — 6 9 0 Ashland 111 010 0 — 4 5 4 Weiss and Reina; Gaviglio and Bruce.
