UVSC, an NCAA Division I program, avenged Saturday's 3-2 pool play loss to the NAIA 19th-ranked Raiders (4-2) by plating four runs on five hits in the opening two innings off SOU ace Miranda Gillaspie (2-1). Junior shortstop Kara Ray accounted for Southern's lone hit - a sixth-inning infield single. The Raiders finished in a three-way tie for first in its pool by splitting a pair of games Saturday. The Raiders dropped a 5-1 decision to top-ranked and defending NAIA champion Simon Fraser but bounced back with the come-from-behind win against Utah Valley State - the school's first-ever win over a D-I program. "Our players are on a little bit of an emotional high after the Utah Valley State game," Raider coach Larry Binney said after the win. "Our three pitchers have done a real nice job in particular." After UVSC scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead, SOU answered in the bottom of the fifth when Ray and Seanna Doyel each singled and eventually scored unearned runs. Gillaspie then retired nine of the final 10 hitters for a complete-game victory. Doyel accounted for two of Southern Oregon's four hits against Simon Fraser, including an RBI single that tied the contest at 1-all in the top of the third. The Clan collected 12 hits off starter Amanda Cregan (1-1) and reliever Megan Beugli, but SFU put the game away only after plating two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Although Binney hopes to add a doubleheader to the schedule this week, Southern's next scheduled action is next weekend's Cal State-Hayward Invitational. Track At Sacramento, Southern Oregon senior Megan Heuberger posted a provincial qualifying mark for NAIA nationals of 1 minute, 5.32 seconds in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at the Hornet Open on Saturday. Heuberger also ran a leg on the women's winning 4x400 relay team. The time of 4:02.02 is also a provincial qualifying mark. Andrea Eide, Rachel Hinze and Brook Jaentsch were also on the team. The Raider women placed second in the 4x100 relay with a 50.0 hand-held time. The team was the same except for Emily Dunn replacing Jaentsch. Other women's highlights were a first by Jaentsch in the high jump (5-1) and second by Brynn Cogdill in the 3,000 (10:21.48). The top individual men's performance was Sean Peterson's sixth in the 3,000 meters (8:55.01). The men's 4x400 relay team, with Colby Stone, Dusty Waugh, Ross Dexter and Trevor Palmer, placed third (3:29.39). In Saturday's victory, SOU's Amy Hurlocker trailed 2-5 in the second set and rallied for a 6-2, 7-5 win.
