Led by Eric Thompson’s 25-point, 10-rebound performance, the 11th-ranked Raiders hit 37 of 51 shots, including 20 of 23 in the opening half, to win for the fifth time in their last six games. Jacob Kaler added 17 points, Tim Weber nine points and 10 assists and Ben DeSaulnier 14 points, four rebounds and five assists. Marquise Doss scored 17 points and Jordan Dam 16 to lead Evergreen (3-10, 0-6). The Raiders unloaded in the opening 20 minutes to make the second half virtually meaningless, draining 8 of 11 3-pointers and shooting 87 percent overall to take a 61-35 lead into the break. Thompson finished 9 of 11 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from long range, while Kaler hit 5 of 6 shots. Thompson, DeSaulnier, Kenny Meyer and Justin Martin combined to hit 10 of 15 3-point attempts. Completing SOU’s dominance, the Raiders also outscored Evergreen 44-28 in the paint and won the battle of the boards 42-15, and the shooting percentage was the best in head coach Brian McDermott's 19 years. Southern Oregon hosts Northwest (12-6, 3-3) tonight. Women’s Basketball Kristen Schoenherr scored 15 points and Courtney West 12 points and 10 rebounds as 16th-ranked Southern Oregon built an 11-point halftime lead then pulled away in the second half for a 77-56 win over Evergreen State on Friday at Bob Riehm Arena. The win improve the Raiders to 14-2 overall and 5-2 in the Cascade Conference, while Evergreen fell to 8-5 and 2-4. Schoenherr scored 10 points in the opening half, when Southern Oregon shot 49 percent from the floor. Carly Meister added 12 points and nine board and Alexi Smith nine points and three rebounds for the Raiders. Also for SOU, Autumn Durand and Tiani Bradford combined for 23 points and 16 assists. Evergreen State was led by Sadee Jones, who tallied 18 points and eight rebounds. College Wrestling At Fort Wayne, Ind., second-ranked Southern Oregon dominated its first two opponents by a combined score of 72-18 to advance to the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals on Friday at Memorial Coliseum. The Raiders trounced Cumberland (Tenn.) 40-9 in the opening round then crushed Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 32-9 in the quarterfinals. They’ll face fourth-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) in the semifinals at 8 a.m. today, with the winner slated to face either top-ranked Grand View (Iowa) or fifth-ranked Great Falls (Mont.) in the championship. Southern Oregon is after its first National Duals title since 2009. The finals begin at 1:30 p.m. and the third-place match at 10 a.m. Against Embry-Riddle, Devin Poppen (133 pounds), Brock Gutches (174) and Taylor Johnson (197) each pinned their opponent, while Dalton Urrutia (157) and Clayton Burtis (heavyweight) earned major decisions. Against Cumberland, Southern Oregon jumped ahead 16-0 behind a forfeit at 125, a 37-second pin by Poppen and a 12-4 major decision by Trevor Hancock (141). Girls Basketball Churchill outscored Ashland 19-11 in the fourth quarter and benefited from a crucial offensive foul call in the final seconds to pull out a 50-48 victory in a Midwestern League barnurner at Mountain Avenue Gym on Friday. Ashland senior guard Georgia Williams led the Grizzlies (6-5, 0-2 MWL) with 28 points and seven rebounds but was called for a charge with three seconds to go to seal Churchill’s comeback. Sierra Webster added six points and 10 rebounds, Leilani Sukles seven points and Michaela Dunn four points and six boards. “This is definitely our toughest one in a long time,” Ashland coach Ashley Hafner said. “I don’t feel like they deserved a loss tonight, but I hope that lights a spark for us (today) and we take care of business (against Cascade Christian).” Khadija Smith scored 14 points and Lauren Haugen 12 to pace Churchill (6-6, 1-0), which outshot Ashland 26-10 at the free throw line. Hafner said the free-throw disparity hurt the Grizzlies, especially in the fourth quarter, when she said the Lancers were called for only one foul. But Ashland still was in position to win the game late, she said. “No matter what,” she said, “we need to close out games, and that’s our take-away from this game.” CHURCHILL (50) – Moriguchi 0, Nesbitt 0, Brehmer 2, Keller 2, Williams 11, Smith 14, Couts 9, Haugen 12, Bass 0, Nitkowski 0. JV result – Churchill won. Boys Basketball At Eugene, Collin Malcolm led Ashland with 16 points but the Grizzlies fell to Churchill 48-39 on Friday at Churchill High School.
