By Casey Bright Ashland As builders, contractors, carpenters and others in the trades, we know firsthand what a house can really mean to people. We have all watched the news and have seen the total destruction and despair in the wake of Hurricane Katrina — so many towns and cities destroyed, so many houses gone, so many families displaced. What if those people were your friends or family? What if those now “homeless” kids were mine or yours? How can we help? They are not Republicans or Democrats. They are not any particular church or religious point of view. They are not rich, poor or middle-class. They are not black, white or purple. They are not even strangers on the other side of the world. They are our neighbors. They are us, and we must help out. The fire, police, medical and other emergency services, as well as the thousands of good people who worked to save lives, have made it through the worst of the storm. Now, we see the military, the National Guard, Red Cross, Salvation Army and many others helping to rescue, relocate and meet the basic needs of hundreds of thousands of “homeless refugees.” Let’s be sure that we don’t lose interest as time goes by. Where will we all be in three months, in six months or one year from now? We are very fortunate here in Ashland and in the Rogue Valley. We are in the middle of a real estate and building boom, which is keeping all of us working and benefiting from the growth in our area. So, I know that I may have to pay more for plywood, sheetrock or roofing next year because so much material is being shipped down south. Well, that’s OK with me. Those folks are going to need it more than I am. I, personally, have chosen to make my contribution (both now and for months to come) through “Habitat For Humanity.” They will be there in the Gulf Coast states rebuilding homes and lives one at a time. I also know that they will be there for the long haul. So, I suggest that those of us in the building trades, or even in the real estate and mortgage lending business, consider this particular organization. The work they do has special value in helping people rebuild their homes with dignity instead of charity.
