OUR VIEW Our View: One more time Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News A Seattle artist's alternative proposal for a work of public art for the Gateway Island has been released, and predictably, the same critics who savaged Susan Zoccola's "Gather" design are dismissing "Concept 2" as well. The critics don't like the fact that a local artist was not selected, although local artists were invited to submit works. They don't like the modern design, although the project's criteria specifically called for a work challenging the viewer's traditional perspective on art. They allege secrecy and an elitist, top-down selection process, although public participation was encouraged throughout. The truth is, it's unlikely any work would have met with widespread acclaim. Such is the nature of public art, especially when tax dollars pay for it, giving residents a sense of ownership. It's also a characteristic of artworks that they tend to grow on viewers. Remember the harsh criticism when the Vietnam memorial wall was first revealed? It's now an iconic feature of the National Mall, and traveling replicas attract thousands of visitors. Zoccola's first design, a modified torus-shaped cage of metal strips, was denounced by many. Bowing to the clamor of critics, the City Council asked her to submit a second design and said it would choose between the two. We find "Concept 2" less appealing than "Gather," but that is an entirely subjective reaction, as is everyone's to any work of art. Rather than starting the process all over again, as some are calling for, the council should make its choice and move on.
