(PHOTO BY: LARRY STAUTH JR) Saturday Nov 5, 2016 at 2:00 AM By Dan JonesFor the Tidings The fifth-seeded Ashland football team cruised in its first-round Class 5A state playoff game, defeating No. 12 Mountain View, 30-7, on Friday night. The Mountain Valley League-champion Grizzlies (8-2) will face No. 4 Lebanon in the quarterfinals next Friday. Lebanon beat No. 13 Hillsboro, 52-7. Nicky Weinberg scored on a 30-yard pass from Tucker Atteberry to give the Grizzlies a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, and Ashland didn't have much trouble from there. Alex McKernan scored on a 30-yard interception return and, after Mountain View made it 14-7, Weinberg recovered a fumble by the Cougars (6-4) and returned it 14 yards to paydirt. "When (McKernan's) number was called, he was ready," Ashland head coach Charlie Hall said. "He's been helping out on varsity and has been playing quite a bit the last couple weeks. Today he was tested and did a good job." Weinberg finished with four catches for 72 yards, and he made 12 tackles on the defensive end. Malik Pippa had eight carries for 120 yards, including a 75-yard TD, and made two grabs for 43 yards. Atteberry was 10-for-16 for 147 with one pick. McKernan and Oliver Warren both had two interceptions against the Cougars, who made six total turnovers. "Our defense did a great job," Hall said. They really set the tone." Chad Andrews added a 25-yard field goal. "I've got to give our kids a lot of credit," Hall said. The Grizzlies outscored Mountain View 13-0 in the third.
