I strongly disagree with recent letters questioning their decision to continue processing Measure 37 claims after a Marion County judge ruled against it. The reality is the judge’s ruling was clearly wrong and it is not final. The ruling is being appealed to the Oregon Supreme Court, which is expected to act very soon. Our county commissioners are simply trying to keep the process moving. It helps claimants without any risk to the county. Don Ellsworth Ashland Another fire engine to honor I liked “The little fire engine that could” by Lance Pugh article (Jan. 9). This brings to mind historic Southern Pacific Engine No. 2579, “the little steam engine that could.” Of course, at total loaded weight of 217,800 pounds or 108.9 tons, this machinery of a bygone era isn’t really little. For nearly 50 years now, Engine No. 2579 has resided at Veteran’s Memorial Park near downtown Klamath Falls. Like many youth, I, too, enjoyed climbing aboard this engine, standing inside the cab, and wondering what this engine was like when it literally breathed fire, steam and power. Engine No. 2579 was donated to the City of Klamath Falls in 1957, shortly after being decommissioned from service in September 1956. The American railroads were almost complete in their conversion to diesel engines by this time. Most of these old steam engines were relegated to the scrap heap, and lost to a historic past. Fortunately, old Engine No. 2579 is on display today, housed beneath a large wooden shed, and within 65 miles of Ashland. Happy 100th birthday for Engine No. 2579. James A.
