That brings the total to five new police officers since August. APD is now in the process of looking for two more officers. When those positions are filled, the department will be at full staff for the first time since in "seven or eight years," said Deputy Police Chief Rich Walsh. "We're really excited about this new batch of people," Walsh said. "It's really nice to see people here who are excited to be here. Morale is high." Lesowski is new to Southern Oregon, growing up in Sandy, Oregon and transferring to APD from the Portland Police Department. But she does have a local connection. Her fiance, Aaron Hull, is an officer with the Phoenix Police Department. His brother is Theron Hull, who works with APD. "I've never been to Southern Oregon until I met Aaron," she said, noting that she and Hull when in the police academy together. "When I found out Ashland was hiring I applied." She said her husband's job in Phoenix "was a huge part" of her decision. "There were a whole bunch of factors but I probably never would have considered the southern part of the state" without Hull." She and Hull live together in Medford. She said another part of her decision was that she wanted to do police work in a smaller, tighter-knit community than the Portland area. "It's nice to know the town you work in," she said. "It's very community-oriented here. That's what I was looking for." Dale came to APD from the Talent Police Department, where he worked for more than a year, but he partially grew up in Ashland and attended high school here. His first job in law enforcement was working for the Jackson County Juvenile Justice Department, where he was employed for almost seven years. It was at that job that he first made friends with Ashland police officers. While at Talent PD, he made more Ashland police officer friends. "I know every single one of them," he said, about his new co-workers. "I feel like a I can walk in with some experience. I still know a lot of people in town." Like Lesowski, he said the lure of working for APD lies largely with the community he will serve as police officer. "I like the idea of walking down the street and waving at your neighbor," he said. "I feel such a strong tie to the community here." In addition to serving on the police force, Dale would also like to serve the Ashland community in other ways, as well. He talked about coaching children's sports in his spare time. "My goal is to be here a while," Dale said. "Actually, I could see myself retiring here." The three other recent hires are: Devon Lee; Matt Carpenter and Jason Weber.
