The AAUW for 130 years has been a very political force of “smart, savvy women ... who aren't afraid of speaking truth to power” and know how to get their calls returned, said Lisa Maatz, Vice President of Government Relations for AAUW in Washington for the last 12 years. Marking Women’s History Month, Maatz invited members meeting at the Ashland Springs Hotel to link into “tons of information” on the weekly AAUW Action Network, as they work on today’s thorny issues of the pay gap, Title 9 entitlements, campus sexual assault and expansion of the Violence Against Women Act to better cover immigrants, students, LGBT women and Native Americans.   Being a member of AAUW and learning how to use its tools and networks helps members become recognized as “opinion leaders” — so instead of trying to persuade the whole crowd, they target resources to people in the crowd who everyone trusts. AAUW has become noted and respected because, says Maatz, “We have a lot of patience and a lot of impatience.” But the impatience does not make them testy with conservatives or overly relaxed with the left. “This is why I get my calls returned,” she said, to much laughter. “Because they fear the wrath of the world. We brought them into the world and we can take them out. We speak the truth to power ... It does us no good if one party ignores us and the other party takes us for granted.” Getting things done politically is a lot easier, she says, if you connect with or sign up one just one more member, as you then, for example, have also to consider her connections with her church, her book club and other networks — and politicians recognize if they give you one “bad meeting” or don’t get back to you, it’s going to be shared with dozens of others. Working in the hyper-polarized Congress today is notably difficult as the electorate “sends the bluest of the blue and the reddest of the red and expects them to talk to each other,” she notes. “And they have no trouble back home if they appear to be not part of the system.” Maatz bemoaned the “precipitous” drop in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) occupations for women, when they were the majority of digital coders in the '70s and '80s. Apropos of that, she related the old story that, at the inception of AAUW, the prevailing myth was that educated women would have trouble bearing children. It was the first members who did their own research and debunked that. Through its National Conference of College Women Student Leaders, teen girls are having a “life-changing experience” and are being taught through the “Elect Her” program to win offices in student government, a post that usually goes to males, she notes. The STEM Tank is also getting young females going on a successful track, she said, adding, “We’re changing the world one girl at a time.” For more information on the Ashland AAUW, email [email protected].
