Betty Wheeler, Talent recorder, said thus far she has had one person, Brian Roberts, return the finished petition and four others who have picked up forms. She said this is about normal for a presidential election year. "People are a little slow about bringing their forms back," said. "I am a little more encouraged because more people have stepped forward this year. It is exciting as we may have some contests this year." Four city council seats are up for grabs. Roberts filed for Seat 6. The Seat 3 winner will complete the two years remaining on the term of Lisa Shapiro, who resigned her seat. Dawn Watson was appointed to serve until the November election and has picked up papers to run for the position. Seats 2, 4 and 6 are all four-year terms. Anyone interested in filing must meet with Wheeler and receive an information packet. They must file a form showing interest and then candidates must secure 20 signatures of registered voters on a petition to qualify. The City Recorder's office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Ashland student joins science program Jonny Armstrong of Ashland is participating in the John S. Rogers Science Program at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Armstrong, a senior biology major, is studying with Assistant Professor of Biology Ken Clifton's research team on "Exploring the ecological consequences of gamete release by green seaweeds of coral reefs." The John S. Rogers Science Research Program prepares outstanding students for careers in the sciences by supporting collaborative scientific research between students and faculty. The program aims to attract and retain outstanding students and faculty in the mathematical and natural sciences. Rogers fellows are trained as scientists, but as scientists who have a responsibility to communicate the purpose and results of their work to a general audience. Biscuit fire sale sends timber to Brookings The U.S. Forest Service completed another Biscuit fire timber salvage sale on Wednesday. The Steed sale, which includes some 6.07 million board feet in the Gold Beach Ranger District, was purchased by CLR Timber Holdings Inc. of Brookings for the advertised rate of $241,138. The firm's bid was the only one received during the auction held at the agency headquarters in Medford. The sale covers 391 acres. However, the sale of two units, the Chetco sale in the Chetco Ranger District and the Lazy sale in the Galice Ranger District, were stopped after two bidders spoke to each other during the auction, according to Judy McHugh, spokeswoman for the Biscuit fire salvage project. Timber sale auction regulations forbid bidders from communicating with each other during an auction, she said. Those sales will be readvertised and offered later, she said. The Chetco sale includes 289,000 board feet of timber while the Lazy sale includes 4.3 million board feet. The next auction is scheduled for Aug. 18. Thus far, five timber salvage sales totaling some 40 million board feet of timber have been sold since the agency began offering them in early July. The Biscuit fire, located primarily in the Siskiyou National Forest, covered nearly half a million acres. It was sparked by a lightning storm on July 13, 2002. The agency announced earlier this summer that it plans to salvage about 370 million board feet of fire-killed timber from the fire.
