The Jackson County Vector Control District conducts mosquito-control measures designed to reduce the risk of diseases spread by mosquitoes, primarily West Nile Virus, which affects horses and humans, and heartworm, which affects dogs. The district emphasizes controlling mosquitoes in the larval stage, but sprays for adult mosquitoes on request or when large numbers are trapped. The district uses a pyrethroid insecticide, a synthetic that mimics a natural insecticide found in chrysanthemums. It is sprayed between 3 and 6 a.m., from truck-mounted sprayers, at low concentrations, and the chemical breaks down quickly when exposed to sun and moisture. Scheduled spraying may not happen depending on weather. The district posts notifications of planned spraying on its website, http://jcvcd.org/ , as well as information about the sprays it uses, tips on controlling mosquitoes on your property and information about other disease vectors, including flies, ticks and rats. If you click the "No Spray" link and submit your information, the district will not spray within 300 feet of your property unless there is a documented disease outbreak, in which case you will be notified in advance. You can also sign up for email notification of scheduled spraying in your area.
