SATURDAY February 28, 2004 - Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card Valley&State Backpage O&E Sports Archives Classifieds Faith&Beliefs Obituaries Revels January 23, 2004 Fatal wreck on I-5 is under investigation A Weed man was killed Thursday evening when his pickup slammed into the back of a slow-moving semi in the Siskiyou Summit area. Oregon State Police officials said the 29-year-old man, whose name has not been released, drove into the back of the semi-tractor on Interstate 5 around milepost 1 about 5:05 p.m. The semi was driving between 25 and 30 mph and the pickup was driving at least 65 mph, OSP officials said. The man in the pickup died at the scene. No one else was injured in the incident. About 10 minutes earlier, the California Highway Patrol had notified troopers on both sides of the Oregon-California border of a possibly intoxicated driver in a Nissan pickup heading north, OSP officials said. An accident reconstructionist is working on the case and an autopsy is planned, OSP officials said. The deceased driver reportedly was diabetic and complications from that disease could have caused erratic driving. 12:52 a.m. Friday - Report of a Honda Civic that was broken into on the 500 block of Clay Street. The vehicle's owner reported nothing was taken, although there was $100 damage to the driver's side window. 12:53 a.m. Friday - Report of an unknown suspect who was caught going through a car on the 600 block of Clay Street. The suspect was chased off prior to the officer's arrival. Nothing was taken, but there was $100 damage to the passenger window. 11:57 p.m. Thursday - An officer observed a male juvenile stepping out of a vehicle with an open bottle of alcohol on Oak Street. He was warned and released to his parents. 5:20 p.m. Thursday - Report of a male transient, 48, who was engaging in violent behavior on Ashland Street at Interstate 5. He reportedly was slapping, punching and pushing down another man. The assaulted male was treated and released at a local hospital before being taken to detox. The suspect was found in the roadway of Highway 66 blocking traffic and alarming drivers. The man was intoxicated and arrested for disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.
