The Bulldogs went undefeated in conference play, finished 20-12 overall and placed seventh in the Western Water Polo Association Tournament, the sub-tourney into the collegiate final-four championship. "It was a good year," explained Foley. "We accomplished our goal of winning our conference and moving on." Along the way, Foley accomplished something he hadn't planned on. The 2000 Ashland High grad received NCAA Division III Player of the Year honors, in addition to being a first-team All-American selection and a second-team all-tournament choice at the Western Water Polo Association tourney, which includes teams from all levels of collegiate play. "It wasn't really something I was striving for or expecting," Foley said. "It just kind of came. I didn't really know what to think. I was honored." Foley's statistics explain why he was awarded the top honor in Division III water polo. This fall, the former Grizz scored 39 goals, contributed 36 assists, tallied 60 steals and drew 41 ejections. In four years as a Bulldog he had 111 goals, 103 assists, 60 steals and 41 ejections drawn as his team compiled a 79-40 overall record and went 33-1 against conference foes. The past three seasons, the University of the Redlands men's water polo team has gone undefeated in league play. "It's a very good program," said Neil Foley, Adam's father and the Ashland High swim coach. "It's a very prestigious program. Even though it's Division III, they've been ranked as high as No. 16 in Division I. They compete well with the big guns." Foley, who began swimming competitively when he was five, got into water polo eight years ago, during his freshman year at Ashland High. His father started the Grizz water polo program in 1997.
