Grizz netters benefit from win, North Medford loss Wire Reports Ashland played two of its finest games of the season to start the match, then held on for a 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 Southern Oregon Conference victory over Grants Pass, Thursday at Mountain Avenue gym. Chelsea Van Lehn had 17 kills for the Grizzlies, who improved to 4-1 in league play and the same record overall. Chey Hale added 12 kills and 19 digs, Erika Boehnke tallied seven kills and three solo blocks and setter Kate Morris amassed 43 assists. The Grizzlies also got a little help from Roseburg. The Indians became the first team to topple North Medford, allowing Ashland to move into a three-way tie for first-place in the SOC standings. Roseburg, which fell to Ashland Tuesday in a five-game marathon match, beat North 28-26, 25-18, 25-15. Ashland will play in the Rogue Valley Classic this weekend before resuming league play Tuesday at Crater. Cross Country At Klamath Falls, the Crater High boys cross country team had two top-10 finishers and claimed first place in the Southern Oregon Conference pre-district meet on Thursday. The Comets' 56 points beat out Ashland, which finished second at 69. Grants Pass grabbed third with 77 points. The Grizz boys were led by Andy Wright, who took fourth in 16 minutes, 54.01 seconds. Klamath Union's Kevin Pellegrino took the individual title in 16:12.63. In girls action, North Medford had four top-10 finishers, led by runner-up Danielle Jordan (19:27.80), en route to second place as a team. Katie Leary's winning time of 18:56.50 helped the Pelicans to a victory. Natalie Hemphill paced the AHS girls with a 15th-place finish in 22:28.75. Football The North Medford High football team sacked Ashland 26-16 Thursday night at Phillips Field. Scoring touchdowns for Ashland were Josh Cornelius, who caught a TD pass from quarterback Sam Littleton, and Martin Ferrero, who scored on a pass from Derek Steadman. The Ashland High freshman team also lost Thursday night, 7-6 to Yreka.
