The Pilots scored eight runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-2 deficit. Phoenix rebounded to win Game 2, 8-2. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings When you have just three wins in 14 games, the search for a ray of light can go on and on. Still, Ashland Pilots head coach Don Senestraro had a few to chose from after Tuesday’s American Legion A twin bill split against Phoenix. Ashland rallied from a 6-2 deficit to beat the Buccaneers 10-6 in the opener, but fell 8-2 in the nightcap as the Pilots’ up-and-down season continued at North Mountain Park. The Game 2 loss dropped Ashland to 3-11 overall and 2-7 in Area 4 play, while Phoenix, which has so far played only league games, moved to 2-8. Ashland got solid pitching performances out of young guns Sam Gaviglio and Tyler Killeen, and scored eight runs on seven hits to roar back in the sixth inning of the opener. But the Pilots also shot themselves in the foot by committing three errors in each game and leaving five runners on base in the first two innings of Game 2. “A couple kids got hits and were stealing some bases and things just started rolling for us, and once they catch fire I think everybody gets excited and wants to keep playing hard,” Senestraro said of Ashland’s Game 1 comeback. “Then, in the second game, it just seemed like we were a little flat. We swung at a lot of bad pitches in the dirt and just didn’t play too good.” Gaviglio pitched two solid innings of relief to pick up the win in Game 1. Killeen was tagged with the loss in Game 2, but showed the potential his coaches rave about in three innings of middle relief. Phoenix pitcher Dustin Smith put together four strong innings after entering the game in the fourth and ended up with the win to improve to 1-1. He also helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Ashland third baseman Justin Meza hit a solo home run off Phoenix starter Kyle Campbell to tie Game 2 at 1-all, but the Pirates busted the game open by scoring two runs off Killeen in the fifth and five off Jake Halverson — with the help of two Ashland errors — in the seventh. The Pilots blew a chance to cut off Phoenix’s seventh-inning spurt when Meza overthrew catcher Michael Shulters on a would-be force at home. The bases were loaded with nobody out when Meza fielded the hard grounder. Two runs scored on the play and two more scored moments later on wild pitches. Ashland’s first three batters reached base in the bottom of the inning. The rally was snuffed out, however, when Smith got the next two to fly out and the third, Ben Morris, to ground out, ending the game and preserving the Bucs’ win. Morris’ groundout provided an appropriate wrap up, as Ashland’s top five batters finished the game 2-for-15 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. It was a different story in Game 1, when Morris’ RBI single gave Ashland the lead for good, 7-6. The Pilots had 11 hits in all — two by leadoff hitter Tysin Senestraro, two by Meza and two by Gus Gaviglio. Gus Gaviglio, Sam Gaviglio’s older brother, went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple in the sixth and three runs scored. “We sparked something late in the game and we pulled off the win, but overall I don’t think we played as well as we should have played, and in the second game we just didn’t play well at all,” Morris said.
