'Wally' Kirsher Longtime Ashland resident R.W. "Wally" Kirsher passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, July 28, 2004 in the Portland VA Medical Center. He was 87. Wally was born on July 3, 1917 in Valley Junction (West Des Moines), Iowa to Wray and Maude Kirsher. After graduating from Valley High in 1935, he worked for a time as a golf caddy and then delivered bread for Supreme Baking Company. It was at this time he met the love of his life, Margaret Schulz, at a skating rink. They were married on November 16, 1940 in Bethany, Missouri. Wally served in the Army Air Corp during World War II where he flew thirty-two combat missions as a Gunnery Sergeant in the lead aircraft. He was awarded four Bronze Stars for the Normandy, Air Offensive Europe, Northern France and Germany campaigns. He also received a Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he and Margaret first settled in Medford and then moved to Ashland in 1951. In February 1990, they relocated to Talent. Together they owned and operated A.A. Electric in Ashland from 1950 until retirement in 1980. His hobbies included golf, bowling, fishing, jigsaw puzzles and a good game of cards - be it gin rummy, cribbage or poker. Both he and Margaret were avid fans of the Ashland High Grizzly football team. They had season tickets on the 50-yard line for more than 45 years, only relinquishing their seats in 2003 when they moved to Hillsboro, Oregon to be closer to their children. Before relocating, Wally was active in the Phoenix First Presbyterian Church and was also a 50-year member of the Ashland Elks Lodge. In addition to his wife and best friend of 63 years, Wally is survived by his son Ron (wife Diane) of Portland, Oregon, his daughter Vicki of Vancouver, Washington and his four grandchildren Jeff (wife Maria), Kathy, Robbie, and Mark all of Portland. His parents and his three brothers Larry, Bill and Wray preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 6, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to, Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Road, Central Point, OR 97502. Richard L. Rothschiller Richard Lyle Rothschiller, 65, of Ashland, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Steven N. Weick Steven N. Weick, 48, of Ashland, died July 30, 2004. Memorial services will be at 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 8 at the Ashland Foursquare Church.
