About 30 people, mostly high-schoolers, sat close to one another in the small upstairs alcove. After introductions from the publishers, Hendler began reading a chapter from her book, entitled “Lunch.” Everyone listened intently and laughed appropriately as Hendler imitated teenage language. Every now and then a few note takers would scribble down phrases into their notebooks. Barbara Scott Winkler commented that the book was a good read. “Reading as a mother, I was scared, shocked,” she said. She commented that when parenting a child, it’s important to pay attention and listen, more than give advice. Irene Kai, Hendler’s mother, said that not everyone’s experience in adolescence is the same and we shouldn’t assume that it is. “The Lost Girls” comes from stories Hendler wrote during her undergraduate studies at Reed College in Portland. The stories were initially just for her college thesis. Turning the stories into a book occurred to her while talking to her advisor. Most of the stories are from experiences Hendler had while growing up in Los Angeles. Others are based in Ashland and England. “My writing is usually a finished product right away,” said Hendler. She didn’t have to do any revisions of her work for the book, even thought her stories were written from the time she was 19 to 21. The book was published by Silver Light Publications, a company in which Kai helped create. “We publish stories from people who really speak from their heart and soul,” said Kai. “This book is very intimate and very true to what is happening at large.” Hendler went on to graduate school in England and studied medieval literature. She hopes to become a professor of English some day. Currently, she resides in Portland with her six boa constrictors and three cats.
