Three Southern Oregon University volleyball players and a trio of Raider soccer standouts recently earned NAIA regional or national accolades for stellar fall seasons, adding to a list that began with the record-setting SOU football team. Sophomore Kristina Matchett of Klamath Falls capped the most prolific offensive season in school history by landing first-team NAIA Region I all-star kudos and second-team NAIA All-American status. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter became the school's third NAIA volleyball All-American after leading the Cascade Conference in every offensive category and breaking school game (14), match (33) and season (669) kill records. Matchett, who averaged 5.82 kills per game and amassed a .339 effeciency, helped the Raiders to their first-ever regional title and first-ever national tournament appearance. "That's pretty neat," SOU volleyball coach Paul Elliott said of the honor. "I think it's very well deserved. I thought she could be first team so it really didn't come as much of a shock to us." Senior setter Sabrina Garboden of Aloha led the conference in assists-per-game (11.86) and garnered first-team all-region honors, while sophomore April Lowe of Portland received regional defensive specialist-of-the-year kudos with a 2.98 dig average. Matchett, Garboden and Lowe helped lead SOU to its 14th consecutive winning season (23-10) and a 12th-place NAIA tournament finish. The SOU women's soccer team, which completed its second season of intercollegiate action with a third-place Cascade Conference finish and an 8-10-2 overall record, featured the program's first NAIA Region I all-stars in senior defender Monica Doshier of Ashland, junior goalkeeper Emily Schifferling of Hillsboro and sophomore defender Stephanie Painter of Anchorage, Ala. Doshier, a first-team regional selection who played virtually every position during her two-year all-star career, registered four goals and one assist while anchoring SOU's defense. The 6-foot Schifferling surrendered only 1.99 goals per game last season and recorded 5 1/2 shutouts en route to first-team honors, while Painter was a second-team pick. Only three seniors will graduate off the SOU volleyball squad, which was packed last season with talented sophomores and juniors. Email your...
