Perhaps its the attention to minimizing overhead that allows for much of the agency’s contributions go directly toward its purpose of securing private land for natural protection. Perhaps its the growing success the agency has had in placing large parcels of private land into protective trusts. Perhaps its the important projects the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy undertakes — like its current effort to restore a spawning ground for Coho salmon and steelhead on Williams Creek — to protect the environment and maintain the scenic beauty of our region. Perhaps all of this combines in such a way that forms the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy’s distinctive signature on this Valley. A significant testimony to the laudable goals and methods of the SOLC is the number of diverse businesses that offer support, a list that is growing thanks to a new business partnership program. With the cost of land — and therefore the cost of preserving it — among the highest in the state, the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy faces financial obstacles in most any endeavor. That it accomplishes so much speaks volumes of the group’s ability to overcome those obstacles. In 2006, the conservancy hopes to increase the number of protected acres in the vital Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. This monument is our monument. It is as much a part of the local landscape as the Ashland Springs Hotel and Emmigrant Lake. Increasing the monument’s protected acres by supporting the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy bolsters our local environment in a useful and significant way. As we approach the new year and all of its resolutions, renewed resolve of support for this worthy cause is one that has far reaching benefits for the future.
