SOU grad will detail solo sea kayak adventure Saturday Mar 25, 2017 at 12:01 AM Local report West Coast author, adventurer and Southern Oregon University graduate Susan Marie Conrad will share stories and images from her 1,200-mile solo sea kayak expedition at Bloomsbury Books in Ashland at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 18. Her slide show presentation is a free and open to the public. Signed copies of her adventure memoir from the expedition, “Inside: One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage,” which was published in May 2016, will be available after the talk. Conrad, who lives in Oso, Washington, set out in the spring of 2010 on a solo trip in an 18-foot sea kayak, named Chamellia, that took her 1,200 miles up the Inside Passage, from Anacortes to Juneau, Alaska. Conrad began kayaking while working for the Outdoor Program at Southern Oregon University in the late 1980s. Since that time she has been involved in the paddlesports industry for 25 years and currently holds an American Canoe Association (ACA) Level IV Open Water Coastal certification. She also has been a personal fitness trainer, ski patroller, avalanche team leader, whitewater raft guide, graphic designer, photojournalist and marketing specialist.
