- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us November 26, 2005 County engineer receives top honor at statewide convention of counties Staff reports The Oregon Association of County Engineers and Surveyors recognized Jackson County Engineer Dale Petrasek as County Engineer of the Year at the 100th Association of Oregon Counties Convention held at the Eugene Hilton from Nov. 14 to 17. “Dale has worked in our engineering program since 1973, and been the county engineer since 1991,” said Gerry Douglas, assistant director of Jackson County Department of Roads, Parks and Planning. “He has done an outstanding job for our county and been an active member of OACES since joining our department.” Douglas County Director of Public Works Robb Paul agreed. “When selecting someone to receive this award, we look for an engineer who has served his county very well, and Dale has definitely been outstanding,” said Paul who was OACES president for the year ending this month. Paul noted that a few years ago, engineers throughout the U.S. discovered that many of the nation’s bridges had cracks in their girders. “Jackson County has more of these problem bridges than any other county in Oregon,” he said. “In 2003, the Oregon Department of Transportation came up with $300 million to replace bridges throughout the state, but counties and cities had to basically compete against each other for the funding.” According to Paul, Petrasek completed and submitted applications for the costs of replacing 16 county bridges and one bridge in the city of Rogue River. “It was a major project because of the tight submission timeline and documentation required.” Paul noted that ODOT agreed to pay for the replacement of all 17 bridges — for a total of $39 million primarily because of Petrasek’s efforts. “With the same conscientious effort, Dale then guided the consultant engineering selection process and got all of the engineering contracts awarded to five different firms within four months,” Douglas said, adding that 13 of the bridges are now under construction and two were recently completed. Douglas also noted that Petrasek has successfully applied for additional funding from the federal government for bridge replacement in the county. “In part due to that effort, the county’s girder cracked bridges are now at a level which no longer qualifies them as a significant problem,” he said. “I’m surprised and a little overwhelmed by this award,” said Petrasek, who lives in Central Point with his wife, Marcia. “As county engineer my goal is to make sure that Jackson County has one of the best road systems — including bridges — in the state.
