SI Ashland is one club that belongs to a worldwide organization with over 80,000 members in 132 countries and territories, working to provide opportunities at local, national and international levels to educate, empower and enable women and girls. The global reach and power of the worldwide network is a force for change. Over the past four years SI Ashland, along with clubs around the world, have supported two international projects that have made a difference in saving women’s lives in Papua New Guinea, Western Uganda, Fiji, Nepal and Mali. Papua New Guinea’s maternal mortality rate is high because of distance, lack of transport and isolation in remote rural areas. They are compounded by a struggling health system that has a severe shortage of skilled midwifery clinicians. Birthing in the Pacific (BIP) developed a thorough and cohesive approach that improved the availability of appropriate midwifery care at the national, regional and community level. Inspired by the project, then International President Alice Wells chose the BIP project as her President’s Appeal for 2011-2013. With it came the possibility of increasing BIP funds through the fundraising activities of clubs around the world, including SI Ashland. With this additional funding, more than 90 Village Birth Attendants living in rural and remote areas were trained to help women deliver their babies, reach a health facility and provide antenatal care in their villages, lowering the mortality rate. International President Ann Garvie’s President’s Appeal for 2013-2015 has been lighting up lives in communities in Uganda, Mali, Nepal and Fiji by delivering solar-powered, sustainable projects to educate, empower and enable women and girls. Currently there are six projects in action, all funded by the President’s Appeal and widely supported by clubs and members around the world. In Western Uganda, installation of solar panels and a solar cooker at Musasa Primary School that has approximately 700 students, provides power for lights and laptops provided by Soroptimist International and the cooker will provide meals for the school, as well as allowing for income generation. In Fiji, nine solar cookers that have been installed in three rural locations are benefiting approximately 260 women and children. In Mali, solar power is now being delivered to 20 families in a remote village and in Nepal solar lights are now lighting the homes of 60 families. The impacts of the See Solar and Cook Solar projects cannot be overestimated and ultimately are benefiting women and girls and their communities in all aspects of their lives. “The invaluable contribution Soroptimists make to enhancing society cannot and should not be underestimated. Every member is a global voice for women and girls, which serve locally, nationally and internationally,” Garvie said. Soroptimist International of Ashland is proud to be a part of this global community. If you are interested in membership, contact Pat Acklin, president, at [email protected] for more information.
