Bay Area playwright brings political one-woman show to Oregon Stage Works By Richard Moeschl Ashland Daily Tidings Oregon Stage Works will premiere a new dramatic monologue written and performed by Terry Baum and directed by Carolyn Myers titled, “How Green Was My Ballot.” This one-woman autobiographical comedy describes Baum’s adventures as the Green candidate for U.S. Congress in San Francisco last year. Baum faces impossible odds, beginning with a fight to get her name on the ballot. She never gives up, whether that means getting arrested or appealing her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Baum is a playwright, actress, director and teacher. She has been writing plays since 1972 on themes ranging from gay and immigrant rights, anti-Semitism and medical-ethical dilemmas to the eternal pursuit of love and romance. In 1974, Baum founded Lilith, a San Francisco women’s theater collective, which she led for five years. During that time, she directed or co-authored every production. In 1979, Lilith toured Europe, including the Festival of Nations and the Munich Theater Festival. In 1980, Baum wrote “Dos Lesbos, A Play By, For and About Perverts” with Myers. Baum co-starred in the original production, which played for two years. “Dos Lesbos” was nominated for two Bay Area theater awards. In 1983, Baum premiered a solo dramatic monologue, “Immediate Family,” at the First Women’s Theater Festival in Santa Cruz, Calif. It was performed by a Dutch movie star on Dutch stage and television. It also won the KPFA (Berkeley) Radio Playwriting Competition. In 1984, Baum toured the U.S. with Baum and Tufo, the Official Lesbian Music and Comedy Act of the 1984 Olympics. In 1986, Baum moved to Amsterdam, where she created “One Fool.” The piece was chosen as one of the 10 best plays of 1988 in San Francisco. Baum has toured the world as a solo performer and has had her pieces produced in 11 countries and five languages. In Ashland in 2003, she performed her solo farce, “Waiting for the Podiatrist.” Co-produced by Oregon Stage Works and Mixed Company, “How Green Was My Ballot” is a second-season project and continues Oregon Stage Works’ commitment to artistic partnerships and the nurturing of original work. “How Green” will run at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Jan. 6 through 21, and at 2 p.m. Jan. 8. Performances will be at Oregon Stage Works, A Street Market Place, 185 A St. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Music Coop in Ashland, the Grocery Outlet in Medford, or call 482-9364 for reservations.
