Michael Chesney, commanding officer, for the Young Marines of Southern Oregon didn’t take his challenge serious enough when he challenged the unit. He told the young marines that if they raised $ 5,000 for the American Cancer Society they could do anything to his hair they wanted, color it, shave it, or just anything their brains could conjure up. Little did he know that this group of young people would take him serious. They actually raised a grand total of $5,513.00 for the American Cancer Society. The Young Marines of Southern Oregon have a team with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for life. They walked, jogged, and ran overnight to celebrate survivorship. The Money raised will go for cancer research and support programs. As with many of us, there are those in the young marine program who have been touched by cancer. Ten-year-old Pfc. Cochran has a grandfather who walked a survivorship lap, and 9-year-old Pvt. Murphy has two aunts recovering from cancer The Young Marines of Southern Oregon will continue to help raise money for the American Cancer Society so that one day cancer may be eliminated. The Young Marines is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 youth education program for boys and girls ages 8 through high school. The program focuses on character building through a combination of self-discipline, teamwork and leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
