- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us March 11, 2006 Documentary outlines ‘frauds’ that changed America By Robert Plain Ashland Daily Tidings If you’re looking for a reason not to pay your federal income taxes this year, a new documentary film being previewed at Southern Oregon University today at 1 p.m. will give you a good one. “America: Freedom to Fascism,” a new film written and directed by Oscar-nominated film maker Aaron Russo, is the story of the IRS, the 16th Amendment and the federal reserve system and, according to Russo, “how these frauds changed America.” Russo, who produced the Hollywood classics “Trading Places” and “The Rose” before becoming a libertarian politician and an independent filmmaker, said his latest movie deals with the notion that the 16th amendment, which gave the federal government permission to impose an income tax, was never really ratified by the states. “The people were led to believe that it did [get ratified by the states],” he said. “However there are eight Supreme Court decisions that all said it did not.” His movie is the story of how the American people were led to believe that it was. It is also the story of the Federal Reserve System, which along with the 16th amendment, was created in 1913. “Most people think it’s a federal agency,” Russo said, who plans to be in Ashland to answer questions about his film afterwards. “It’s owned by a bunch of private investors. The government turned over the power to print money to a bunch of private bankers. Having this power, they really have all the power. The federal reserve, to a large degree, controls the government.” His film has only been played in ten cities across the country so far and, Russo said, “The response has been overwhelming.” Aside from making movies, Russo has also had a foray in politics. In 2004 he ran for president as a libertarian, making it as far as the party’s nominating process, and in 1998 he ran for Governor of Nevada, garnering 30 percent of the vote in a four-way race, he said. “I just don’t like what’s happening in my country,” he said. “Whatever way I could find to wake the people up, I did.” Staff writer Robert Plain can be reached at 482-3456 x 226 or [email protected].
