Their mission this year is to use art to raise awareness of hunger concerns in the community. Classes will be held after school on Wednesdays for eight weeks until June 1. Membership is free but limited to the first 25 students who sign up. Organizers haven’t fleshed out how to address the theme of hunger, but possible aspects include what the face of hunger is, how stereotypes about who goes hungry can be misleading, and how proper nutrition relates to the issue of hunger. Hunger could even be metaphorical, as in having a hunger to make positive change in the community. The students will brainstorm in the first two weeks about how they want to create art that will engage the broader community. Then with instruction and tools from the SOU students, the middle school students will not only learn creative techniques with different media, but how to possibly use the art to help with an anti-hunger cause. “Instead of making art for art’s sake, we are looking for art that is civic engagement,” she said. “Hunger is a societal topic worthy of attention. It’s an invisible issue. Many don’t know it exists.” Boehler and her students will draw inspiration from other artists who have addressed dire social issues like hunger and homelessness in the past to see how their art draws awareness to those issues. Boehler said they would then use their art to create a fundraiser to help Access Incorporated, a Jackson County non-profit organization, and the Food Rescue program, which repackages edible and healthy foods that would have gone to landfills. Boehler is an art instructor at SOU who specializes in preparing students to become art teachers. The academy provides a graded practicum for her students, who major in education and art. Funding for the academy comes from a community-based learning grant. “The criteria (for the grant) is that the art has to be more than a superficial experience,” said the 15-year teacher who’s been with SOU for four years.
