Three days after squeezing out a down-to-the-wire, three-point win over North Medford, the Grizzlies beat Crater at the buzzer Friday night when Abeni Hill took a pass from Jamie Roupp and laid the ball in for a 51-49 victory. After winning just two of their nine nonconference games, the Grizzlies have shot out of the gate to go 2-0 in the Southern Oregon Conference. Crater, which had to forfeit its win over South Medford on Tuesday, fell to 0-2 in conference play and 6-5 overall. "I think they're out to kill the old coach," Ashland first-year head coach Ken Lathen said as he slumped in a chair after the game. "I don't know how many more of these I can take, but at least we've won these last two." With the score tied at 49-49, Ashland took a timeout with five seconds left in the game to set up a play. The plan was to give the ball to standout senior guard Alysse Carlson and let her drive, but the Comets took away that option. Instead, Roupp, a junior guard, got the ball near halfcourt and drove toward the basket. When three Comets collapsed on her, she dished the ball to Hill, and Hill fired in a layup just before the horn sounded. "I think they (the Comets) were afraid I was going to kick the ball to Alysse (Carlson), but I was just looking for anyone who broke open," said Roupp, who led Ashland with 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. "I drove the ball and all of a sudden there was Abeni (Hill) wide-open under the basket." Roupp was the one who called the timeout with five seconds to go after Ashland had gained possession in the backcourt. It wasn't the best strategy, however, because the Grizzlies were in the midst of a fastbreak and had two of their players running free toward the basket. "I called the timeout before recognizing we had a fastbreak opportunity," Roupp admitted. "I definitely wanted to make up for that." The setback was tough to swallow for the Comets, who led for nearly the entire fourth period but missed the front end of two one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final 1:15 and went just 5-for-10 from the line in the quarter. Even so, Crater had the ball in the final 30 seconds with the score tied at 49-all. Following a timeout, the Comets got two good looks from inside 10 feet, but neither shot would drop and Roupp finally collected the rebound for the Grizz. "It's a shame one of those didn't drop because they were both high percentage shots," Crater coach Scott Dippel said. "We were patient with our offense and got the shots we wanted; they just wouldn't go in." Carlson, who was the hero in the win over North Medford when she drained two late 3-pointers, was as cold as the snow-filled sky outside the gym for most of the game. But with her team trailing 48-44 and less than a minute to go in the game, she splashed a deep trey from about 23 feet out. Then, after Kenna Reiter made one of two free throws to give Crater a 49-47 advantage, Carlson swished a 12-foot jumper with 35 seconds left that tied the game and set the stage for the dramatic finish. "I just told myself to keep shooting," shrugged Carlson, who finished the game 4-for-14 from the field but still managed 12 points, six steals and five assists. "You can't stop shooting just because you miss a few, and the worst thing you can do is get upset by it and lose your focus. I just tried to stay positive." Said Dippel: "The fact that she (Carlson) comes up big like that in the fourth quarter is the reason she's the best player in the league." Sophomore post Josianne McDermott augmented Roupp and Carlson nicely by contributing 12 points, including 10 in the first half. Hill scored just six but yanked down a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Emily Brookins paced the Comets with 12 points and senior post Jessica Wasniewski added 11. With McDermott scoring eight points in the first period, Ashland jumped to an early 19-11 lead and was out front throughout the first half until Crater's Randi Salyer made a 3-pointer and Haley Hevern converted a free throw in the final minute that tied the game at 28-28 at the break. The Comets inched ahead in the third quarter and took their biggest lead at 38-32 when junior post Kelsey Holderness flipped in a nifty reverse layup. But the Grizzlies weren't worried. Their comfort zone - a frantic fourth quarter - was still to come. ASHLAND (51) - Roupp 14, Carlson 12, McDermott 12, Hill 6, Hasty 4, Thompson 3, Sohl 0, Golling 0. Totals: 21 7-15 51.
