Consider that all of us do not use the ambulance service nor the airport, the golf course, the school system, yet these are all in the Ashland budget paid by our taxes and part of the quality of life here. AFN should not be considered a business, but a service which performs high-speed Internet and cable television at reasonable prices and will eventually benefit the whole community. Welcome to the 21st century, and give it a chance. Mary Ruth Wooding Ashland Support for Bianca from jail I have been reading all the negative publicity surrounding Chief Bianca involving the incident with me. I want to give Chief Bianca my vote of confidence. He handled his baton deftly against me, reminding me of the ’50s gangster movies where a street cop disarms an angry punk with a switchblade, only Chief Bianca knew when to back down to prevent me from getting injured. His officers were well-trained at ground assault tactics and maneuvered around me with agility and precision. My apologies to Chief Bianca, Det. Alderman, Det. Parlette, Sgt. Teresa Selby and officer Steve MacLennan for any undue stress and hardship the incident may have caused. The community could be served no better. Chief Bianca is the caliber of cop mentally and physically that would serve a big-city police force with real time situations as well. Dirk Binder Jackson County Jail Standards will help air quality I am writing in response to Robert Plain’s article earlier this week about Oregon’s emissions standards and Alan DeBoer. While I applaud DeBoer’s opposition to the auto industry’s lawsuit, I strongly disagree with his assertion that improving our state’s emissions standards will not measurably improve air quality in Oregon. His solution — words of praise for high gas prices and road constructoin — forces consumers to absorb the high cost of fuel and current record-high profits for oil companies. Bringing clean car emissions standards to Oregon, in contrast, would pass millions of dollars in savings on to Oregon residents through lower spending on gas, and would make the air cleaner for everyone as new cars and more hybrids put out less pollution and slowed our contribution to climate change. Oregon has long been a leader in environmental and public health policy, and Gov. Kulongoski’s support of clean car legislation should be praised by all Oregonians. Alissa Cordner Ashland Another way to look at new fee I am no happier than most other Ashlanders regarding the $7.50 utility bill surcharge to “bail out” AFN, but here’s a point to consider. Back in early 2003, I was an AFN subscriber for my TV only — to add in the Internet service would have been far more expense than it was worth to me. The monthly charge for the TV service was about $26. In June of 2003 I had to move temporarily to Talent. The only television service available was Charter, and the monthly charge was, as it is today for those not served by AFN, $43. When I moved back to Ashland in October 2003, I subscribed to Charter as AFN was not at that time available on my new street. Lo and behold, because of the presence of AFN, my monthly charge from Charter is $26-plus per month. Now, if I add $7.50 a month to that, my monthly charge is still a month cheaper than for people using Charter where Charter has no competition! AFN is now available to me and I am seriously considering resubscribing to help improve AFN revenue. The city has this debt, I am an Ashland taxpayer, so one way or another, it’s “our” debt. It just would have been nicer if the council had come to us citizens, humbly asking our help rather than arrogantly dumping the surcharge on us.
