As the parade began I was amazed at the talent that was displayed. At times I was at the edge of my seat waiting for more. I think that it is a great idea having such diversity and uniqueness presented. On the other hand, we was rather disgusted and disturbed with a few entries. We have a very difficult time accepting the fact that many families and individuals had negative comments regarding the "loud" and "unhealthy fumes" or "pollution" caused by a group of dirt bikes, However I heard not one complaint nor remark from concerned parents about the group of gay-lesbian individuals displaying inappropriate affection towards one another in front of their small children. In addition, we were extremely displeased with the act of the Kerry campaigners. Tossing around an image of the President of the United States of America was deeply disrespectful and unnecessary. My husband and I do believe greatly in the freedom of speech, but we also believe that these people could have used better judgment and chosen a tasteful way to express their opinion or feelings toward our president. I highly suggest that we as citizens of the U.S. need to pay a little more attention to the phrase "United We Stand." As this was clearly not displayed much at this year's Ashland Fourth of July parade. I must say that Mike and I would rather take our children to see a parade consisting of art, off road adventure, music, beautifully decorated floats and patriotic individuals than that of the issues I have covered today. If you don't like the idea of same-sex couples entering into marriage, for heaven's, sake don't enter into one. But on the other hand, stop being a fussbudget and allow other people the right to lead their lives the way they see fit. In short: Quit budding into matters that are none of your business. If so, why has the alert level not dropped from yellow (elevated) to green (guarded)? Given the failures of intelligence and the flaws in its use, how can anyone know that changes in alert levels are real and reliable, and do not reflect the exigencies of re-election politics? Or, if the threat has increased even as our defenses against the threat have increased, have we not simply embarked upon another arms race? If so, how do we end it? Michael L. Hays Ashland New fears stem from new system Fear in Ashland is a new feeling for me after 23 years of residence, but the failure to get an police officer to the Safeway parking lot in under 20 minutes and the defensiveness of the Medford dispatchers dictates the feeling. So there is a guy in a blue Toyota pickup who pays no attention to parking regulations an has two untethered dogs in the open bed, one of whom bites, riding around Ashland. I spoke to him after being bitten, but not injured. But, for the first time, I backed off out of fear of the scofflaw and because I couldn't get an officer. The folks at Safeway will know if one ever showed. I left several minutes after the pickup. I'm moving out of Ashland very soon but, it seems, none too soon. A.
