Medford set a heat record of 108 degrees Thursday, and again Friday with a high of 109 degrees. The record for Aug. 19, set in 1967, is 107. Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service showed a temperature of 108 in Ashland. Misty Duncan, meteorologist for the Medford National Weather Service, said Medford's forecast for Saturday is a high of 107, cooling off to 64 Saturday night to Sunday morning; Sunday is projected to reach 101. Ashland is forecast to his 104 Saturday, 98 Sunday, and 92 Monday. "High temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees above normal, with some locations reaching as much as 110 degrees," the Weather Service said in a heat advisory. "Exertion of any kind in such heat can be dangerous even for healthy adults, but the very young, elderly and infirm are at high risk for heat-related illnesses." The Southern Oregon Speedway announced on its Facebook page that Friday and Saturday events would be canceled in light of the heat, with make-up races next weekend. Friday's Talent Evening Market was also canceled. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Green Show was canceled Thursday night and Friday night, and may be canceled Saturday and Sunday. Cancellations depend on the performers and are announced the afternoon of each show. The heat will be sticking around through next week, Duncan said, but won't be as hot as this weekend. Medford should expect temperatures in the mid- to upper-90s starting Monday. The abnormally high temperatures are caused by a bank of pressure hanging over the Jackson County area that's stronger than usual.
