Tea & Symphony - Supporting the symphony "Fashions, Flowers & Violins" is the theme for the Rogue Valley Symphony Guild's 21st annual Tea & Symphony benefit taking place at the Rogue Valley Country Club from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 6. Festivities begin with a silent auction, the final chance to purchase raffle tickets for the four "Decorated Violins," and a viewing of the designer decorated tables which will feature extravagant floral centerpieces. This elegant High Tea includes gourmet sandwiches and sweets and an informal tea room modeling of spring fashions with stylish accompaniment by Hermann Steigerwald at the keyboard. The long awaited "Decorated Violin" drawing will conclude the event. Tea & Symphony, launched by Donnis Lausmann, remains a favorite of local symphony supporters. After attending a High Tea fundraiser in Redding 22 years ago, Mrs. Lausmann named and organized the valley's first tea & symphony benefit in 1982, bringing back the lost art of afternoon high tea and live music. "I felt it was a unique and special way to entertain both men and women in the valley on a Sunday afternoon, where we could dress up in our finest, enjoy gorgeous table settings, and make money for the symphony," says Mrs. Lausmann. As the years have progressed, special themes have been selected to stimulate elaborate table decorations by both Guild members and local businesses. A sampling of this year's silent auction includes donated gift baskets from a variety of local merchants along with a Tiffany style lamp, artwork by Charlotte Peterson and a Tibetan rug. Artists Adele Hiles, Christopher Wells, Cathleen Styrwold and Susan Englestein will have the final showing of their "Decorated Violins," in which they used old violins as their canvases, creating original works of art that are "music for your eyes." The violins have been shown during symphony concerts and various art exhibits since November. The final raffle tickets will be sold at the Tea for $5 each or 3 for $10.
