Phil Linsday, and five of his 13 children, have decided they cannot just watch this catastrophe unfold on television. Instead, they are going to help. “When we saw the images on TV we really felt like we had no other option,” Shelley Linsday, Phil’s wife, said this morning. “We have too many abilities to help so we are going to do what we can.” The Linsdays have more ability to help than most. Phil owns a local contracting company, the Linsday Company. Matt, their oldest son and also a general contractor, is bringing a large crane to help with the cleanup straight from the Burning Man festival in Nevada. Tess, Adeline, Zeke and Elliott — their other children who are going — are all able-bodied helpers who have been around enough construction to be able to lend productive assistance. “We decided we had more important things to take care of right now,” Shelley Linsday said, who will hold down the fort here in Ashland. Phil’s initial plan was to leave on Saturday. But because they are receiving so many donations he decided to put off their departure until Monday. The Ashland Food Co-op and Jani Rollins, a local doctor, have donated baby formula and other food. Ashland Hardware has donated tools and materials. Scott Knox, an Ashland veterinarian, has donated pet food. And Ashland Drug Store has made a generous donation, as well. The Linsday’s are hoping more local people, contractors and other businesses can donate additional supplies before they leave on Monday. Shelley Linsday said a great donation would be gas cards. The motor home they are driving down in would likely be donated to either Habitat for Humanity, or another aide group, when they are ready to leave. This might not be for quite some time, though. Linsday said they have committed to help for two months. Phil, she said, could stay longer and if any of the children need to go home earlier, that could be arranged as well. “My guess is Phil will stay as long as he can,” said his wife. She said they are busy loading up the RV with food, such as spam, tuna, peanut butter and bread, so that they will not be a drain on the local resources when they are there. Linsday said they will probably not go to New Orleans, and instead will help out with debris removal and reconstruction in the Gulf Port area. “I would feel uncomfortable going into New Orleans,” Linsday said, noting that after adopting 10 children, taking chances is something they are used to. “I think it’s risky but you don’t become a large adoptive family without being a risk taker.” Matt Linsday will be meeting his family down there. He is coming straight from the Burning Man festival, where he spends about a month each summer enjoying the scene and helping to set up. His mother said he bought a large, used crane for the festival several years ago and this year he is going to take it from there to the relief effort. The Linsdays are coordinating their efforts with Habitat for Humanity, an International nonprofit housing organization that is taking a leading role in the Katrina cleanup effort.
