--> --> Rally focuses on Yucca nuke dump By Myles Murphy Ashland Daily Tidings A cask full of dangerous nuclear waste bound for disposal at Yucca Mountain, Nev., will not be driven through Southern Oregon today, but an event planned this evening will focus attention on the possibility of such things happening in the future. A full-scale "mock" nuclear waste cask was scheduled to stop in Ashland today to bring attention to the dangers of transporting nuclear waste on public highways. "It seems like the threat of nuclear waste disposal is increasing and it's going to be traveling through our back yards and our neighboring states," Peace House Events Coordinator Ali Fulcher said. "We need to highlight this to raise public awareness." The 20-foot-long, eight-foot diameter cask is a model of the containers used to transport highly radioactive waste by truck. The truck is one of six driving across the nation bound for a final stop in Washington, D.C. Peace House is a non-profit social justice organization based in Ashland. Members of Peace House will meet with tour organizers and Ashland residents at 7 p.m. at the Bandshell in Lithia Park to discuss the issue. Event organizers will call for support from senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden to oppose a proposal to allow a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain.
