My list of “shoulds” sounds something like this: “I should be loving all the time. I shouldn’t be judgmental. I should be perfectly organized. I should be a beacon of self-confidence. I should only express emotions in tidy packages that demonstrate emotional depth without overwhelming anyone.” The list goes on, like a relentless taskmaster pushing me towards an idealized vision of psychological health. Perhaps you can relate? Through much of my life, I believed in the “shoulds” and devoted myself to fulfilling them. I was certain that mastering these “shoulds” would be my ticket to happiness. I spent thousands of dollars on personal growth workshops, waiting for the intervention that would end my struggles and create true peace. It never came. Instead I judged myself for having judgments and felt shame for feeling insecure. I have been lucky enough these last few years to be turned on to some very different ideas in the forms of Shadow Work®, mindfulness, and radical acceptance. These perspectives honor the full emotional experience of being human. They offer a way of finding more ease in the midst of it rather than trying to change it. I find these approaches truly empowering in the sense that they honor the whole person and do not create additional “shoulds.” In her book "True Refuge," meditation teacher and psychotherapist Tara Brach talks about the practice of “consenting to receive” our experience just as it is. This is courageous work, to turn and face oneself in this way. I believe it is an essential part of returning to wholeness. There are all these parts of ourselves we have rejected over the years. The trouble is, they never really go away. They just show up in sneakier ways that are just as destructive. True wholeness seems to come from learning how to give them attention without letting them take over. Today in my morning meditation, I experienced waves of excitement, shame, fear, sadness, and peace. Rather than getting caught up in the stories surrounding these feelings, I focused on the way they showed up in my body. I allowed the sensations to rise and fall: a pressure in the belly, warmth in the throat, a tingling in the chest. “I consent to receive this fear. I consent to receive this sadness.” If I noticed a resistance towards something I was experiencing, I consented to receive the resistance too. I could feel my breath anchoring me to presence and self-compassion. There was a strong self-trust, built on years of practice that I could handle whatever arose. There is so much talk about how to be happy, how to “be love, not fear.” I find that this creates an inner separation in which parts of our experience are good and desirable and others are bad and to be avoided. These days I am finding inner peace from the willingness to experience whatever is there, including times of inner turmoil. I call this practice “widening circles” because it asks us to keep noticing the aspects of our experience we are resisting, and to widen our circle of acceptance to allow those to be there as well. I invite you to notice in the moments after reading this what aspects of your experience might be asking for acceptance. They are usually the feelings or bodily sensations that we are trying to avoid or escape from. When you notice them, I invite you to try this simple phrase “I consent to receive this (fill in the blank).” And I wasn’t kidding about making a list of your “shoulds.” It can be a powerful practice to see them laid out clearly in front of you. I would love to hear how these simple practices are for you! Asha Goldstein is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, certified Shadow Work® coach and facilitator.
