On Thursday afternoon, Lincoln student and staff alumni, neighbors and fans will be welcomed into the historic building for a three-hour “Remembering Lincoln” open house. The event is the final coordinated opportunity for community members who do not have children attending Lincoln to take part in a school function and will showcase student art and feature several student performances. Old photos and other memorabilia will also be on display during the open house, which begins at 1 p.m. The event will conclude with everyone holding hands to encircle the school at 4 p.m. “We invited everyone we could think of,” said Lincoln Principal Susan Hollandsworth, explaining city officials, firefighters, police officers, school district staff and other students and staff in the district have been contacted. “This is the last big thing.” The open house began with an impact grant from the Ashland Schools Foundation that funded an artist-in-residence at the school this year. Lisa Shelton helped 165 students at the school create ink drawings of the front facade of Lincoln and watercolor works. “They were excited, willing to do the drawings and very focused,” said Shelton, a long-time Lincoln school volunteer. “Of course, they haven’t seen the outcome yet.” The dulcimer group funded by an Ashland Schools Foundation grant at Lincoln Elementary School practices for its final performance at the open house commemorating the closure of the school. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Shelton, whose youngest daughter, Ellia, is a fourth-grader at Lincoln and whose other two daughters also attended the school, then cut out the drawings of the school, pasted them onto the watercolors and mounted the combined artwork onto black paper. The pieces will be laminated and, on the backs, have a photo of the building and a short history of the school. The final products will be on display in the gymnasium at Lincoln during the open house, where students and families will see them for the first time. Later, students will be allowed to take their work home. “It’s like a little gift remembering Lincoln,” Shelton said. A second ASF impact grant funded the creation of a dulcimers group that will perform six songs at the open house, including “Buffalo Gals,” “Hound Dog” and “Camptown Races.” Trisha Mullinnix’s second grade class made their own dulcimers and have practiced three times a week since January to learn three cords on the string instruments. A few students in the class play the violin and one plays the bass to accompany the group. Staff writer Jennifer Squires can be reached at 482-3456 x 3019 or [email protected].
