OUR VIEW No time for complacency DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Many Ashland residents are viewing the tragic destruction of Weed, Calif., just a short drive to the south, with a sense of trepidation. They know that what happened there could happen here. It almost did in 2010, when the Oak Knoll fire swept through that subdivision, destroying 11 homes. Residents who lost those homes know all too well how quickly they can see everything they own destroyed. Fire officials say the Oak Knoll fire prompted more Ashland residents to form Firewise neighborhoods, where residents learn about fire danger and reducing flammable landscaping. But they say more needs to be done. Here's the scariest part of the Oak Knoll fire: It happened in a part of town that wasn't included in the official Wildfire Hazard Zone. Ashland Fire & Rescue officials rated the risk of wildfire in Oak Knoll as an 8, based on vegetation, topography and weather. Of the city's 16 zones, 14 are rated as dangerous or more dangerous than the Oak Knoll area. AFR has recommended that the entire city be designated a  Wildfire Hazard Zone. A meeting for the general public to discuss that proposal is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at The Grove. In addition, AFR is holding an "Ashland Is Ready" disaster awareness and preparedness workshops on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Historic Ashland Armory. Two sessions will be held that day. Call 541-482-2770 to register, and visit www.ashlandfirewise.org to learn about that program. Together, Ashland residents can help keep the city safe from what happened to our neighbors in Weed.   DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
