The Grizzlies won all three relays and seven of eight individual events, scoring 123 points to the Panthers' 54 and Eagles' 36. "We're thick on the boys' side," first-year Grizz head coach Laura Bishop said. "It's just everywhere." Senior Geoff Berteau and freshman Dashell King each won two individual races. Berteau put five seconds between him and the rest of the field in the 200 IM (2:18.32) and edged out South's Ben Beecher in 100 fly by a second (1:05.94). In his first conference competition, King captured the 50 free (25.07) and the 100 free (55.22). "He's a very good swimmer and just a freshman," Bishop said. "We have a lot of new swimmers." But for the most part, the Grizzlies leaned on their veterans in the SOC season-opening meet. Caleb Salmond, the defending conference champion in the 100 back, and Camren Mitzel. Salmond captured his specialty in 1:01.80, while Mitzel won the 200 free in 2:20.44 to round out the Grizz individual winners. Ashland also received runner-up efforts from Alex Grimaldi in the 100 breast (1:14.59) and Josh Harris in the 100 free (56.91) and 100 back (1:09.28). "Depth and experience are our strengths," Bishop said, adding that Ashland went without senior all-star Ben Dawson on Tuesday afternoon. For the girls, eight swimmers combined for five individual wins and two relay victories, allowing Ashland to squeeze past South Medford 96-90. Eagle Point scored 33 points. "We have a lot of experience," Bishop said, "we just don't have the depth we need." The win would have been much more pronounced had the Grizzly girls been able to put a few more swimmers in the water. The Panthers tallied almost all of their points by picking up third-, fourth- and fifth-place efforts from racers. No more than two Ashland girls entered any single event. Senior Ashley Roda won two individual events and swam legs on two victorious relays to pace the Grizz. Roda claimed the 200 free (2:10.80) and the 100 free (1:00.00), then helped the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay to victory. Angie Scarminach and Fay Walker nearly echoed Roda's performance. Scarminach won the 200 IM (2:41.32) and the 100 fly in addition to swimming on the first-place 200 free relay. Walker earned wins in the 100 breast (1:27.90) and the 500 free (6:22.99). Caitlin Emery accounted for Ashland's other individual win, capturing the 100 back (1:16.65). The Grizzlies continue their SOC schedule on Dec. 18 at the SOU pool. Ashland will host all of its conference meets this season, now that the SOU pool is fully functional.
